Original Intent Theater will present the world-premiere of Janeen Stevens' Toughing Slumaria, a new drama that will be presented at Center Stage (48 W. 21st Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues), with previews beginning on October 25th and an official opening on October 29th.  The play will run through November 13th.

In the show "four young single mothers from different ethnic backgrounds--who live in the same apartment building, and who share the common need of public assistance to get by--through their endurance of a sexually predatory landlord, form a bond which strengthens as they seek a way out of their situation to pursue lives of safety and dignity," according to press notes.

Directed by Barry Gomolka, Touching Slumaria features a cast that includes Scott Van Tuyl, Ali Squitieri, Maire-Rose Pike, Chudney Sykes, Jahnavi Rennison, Barbara Miluski, Lane Wray, Stephanie English, Erin Fogel, Manny Liyes, and Ray Wasik.  The design team for Toughing Slumaria comprises Hoyt Charles (sets), Hillery Makatura (lighting) and Georgien Cooney (costumes).

Stevens is the author of the plays No Greater Love (Xavier Company) and Barcinda Forest. As an actress, she has performed extensively in regional theatres and in New York, including in Under Milkwood at Pulse Ensemble and Beyond the Horizon at Jane St. Theatre. She also toured the Asian Pacific Rim as Henrietta in the musical Little Mary Sunshine.

"Original Intent Theater looks to the history of dramatic form -- how it has been reconfigured to serve people throughout history in expressing themselves, their concerns and the ideas of their time -- to tell modern stories to modern audiences.  And to do so in the modern marketplace where telling important stories on a small, inexpensive scale remains essential, if increasingly difficult."

Toughing Slumaria's performance schedule is as follows: Oct. 25 - Oct. 29 at 8pm; Nov. 2 - 5, 7 & 9 - 12 at 8pm; and 3pm matinees on Nov. 6 and 13. Ticket prices are $15 and can be purchased by calling Ticket Central at 212-279-4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.com.
