The Museum of Modern Art has released their upcoming film events, including Cinema Tropical, Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dziga Vertov, and more.

In Focus: Cinema Tropical
May 4-16
Founded in 2001 by Carlos A. Gutiérrez and Monika Wagenberg, Cinema Tropical has played a major role in introducing U.S. audiences to the burgeoning Latin American cinema movement. The New York-based nonprofit media arts organization began distributing, programming, and promoting Latin American film at the outset of the biggest boom in Latin American cinema in decades, and this series presents standout examples by some of the region's most accomplished and innovative contemporary filmmakers.

Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area
May 8-9
To celebrate the publication of Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1945-2000, the Department of Film has invited editors Steve Anker, Kathy Geritz, and Steve Seid to curate three programs of films and videos, largely drawn from MoMA's collection, that explore the themes and movements and trace the chronology of alternative film and video in the Bay Area. The curators and some of the artists and contributors to the book will be present at selected screenings.

Dziga Vertov
Through June 4
MoMA's Dziga Vertov retrospective, the most comprehensive ever assembled in the United States, features an extensive selection of Vertov's silent films, sound features, and related work by collaborators and rivals in what he called his "factory of facts." On May 4, Annette Michelson introduces Esfir Shub's The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty. On May 6, Peter Kubelka presents his restoration of Vertov's Enthusiasm: Symphony of the Donbass. And on May 7, John MacKay presents an illustrated lecture on Vertov's life and work, followed by a moderated conversation with artists William Kentridge, Peter Kubelka, and Michael Nyman.

Kino! 2011: New Films from Germany
Through May 2
Don't miss the final days of our 32nd annual survey of recent German cinema. Upcoming screenings include the enormously popular serialized television movie The Weissensee Saga: A Berlin Love Story; a new documentary about the publisher Gerhard Steidl; Florian Cossen's award-winning debut film The Day I Was Not Born; a documentary on Pina Bausch by Anne Linsel and Rainer Hoffmann; a disturbing drama by Philip Koch; and the popular Next Generation program of new shorts from German film schools.

Modern Mondays
Ongoing
MoMA's ongoing showcase for innovation on screen, Modern Mondays allows contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists to present their work directly to audiences. On May 9, in conjunction with Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area, curators and artists from the Bay Area and New York discuss differences in style, support, and filmmaking environment on the two coasts.

An Auteurist History of Film
Ongoing
This ongoing screening cycle explores the evolution of film as a medium by charting the careers of several key directorial figures-not in order to establish a formal canon, but to develop one picture of cinematic history. Upcoming screenings focus on the work of Orson Welles and John Ford. Be sure to check out curator Charles Silver's Auteurist History posts at MoMA's Inside/Out blog.
