LongHouse Celebrates Edward Albee's 80th on March 12
On Wednesday, March 12, 2008 the LongHouse Reserve has the privilege of hosting an exceptionally great evening benefit at the historic Cherry Lane Theater. Longtime supporter and Pulitzer Prize winning author Edward Albee has chosen to share his 80th Birthday with the East Hampton based art and sculpture center, LongHouse Reserve.
Albee has honored LongHouse by dedicating this performance of his seminal plays, The Sandbox and the American Dream, on his birthday at the theater where these influential plays were originally produced in 1961. Coming on the heels of rave reviews for Fall 2007's Peter and Jerry (encapsulating Zoo Story), this evening is an opportunity to see Albee's radical early plays that changed the course of American theater. An additional treat, Edward Albee himself will direct this production.
Prior to the performance, LongHouse Reserve Trustee and gallery owner, Charlie Cowles is opening his art-filled loft for a pre-theater supper for LongHouse supporters who purchase tickets at the Benefactor or Underwriter level. LongHouse will arrange transportation from the dinner to the nearby theater, and as this is an unprecedented private night, the curtain will wait for the dinner guests should an extra moment of cultural feasting prove hard to resist.
After the performance, everyone, including the cast will join Mr. Albee to celebrate his birthday with an epic 17 layer cake, one layer to commemorate each of his 17 ground-breaking plays.
All proceeds from the LongHouse Reserve Celebrates Edward Albee's 80th Birthday will support the LongHouse Reserve's mission to exemplify living with art in all forms. Through its gallery, arboretum, sculpture gardens and educational programs, LongHouse brings together art and nature, aesthetics and spirit, with a strong conviction that the arts are central to living wholly and creatively.
The event will be held at the Cherry Lane Theater (38 Commerce Street, just off 7th Ave, NYC). The Pre-performance supper at Charles Cowles loft with Edward Albee (for Benefactor and Underwriter ticket holders only) begins at 6PM. Performance, followed by birthday party with the cast & Edward Albee's 17 layer cake will occur at 8PM.
Tickets: Premium (limited number of seats, include program and party) $500, Benefactor* $1,250 and Underwriter* $2,500
