NPR: Solo theatergoers are on the rise — and theaters want more of them
Nearly 20% of Broadway theater tickets are now being purchased by solo attendees — double the rate from just a couple of years ago, according to audience data for the 2024-25 season from the Broadway League. ATG Entertainment, a live theater operator with venues across the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, launched a "Solo Seats" initiative designed to make going to the theater alone feel less intimidating. The inaugural event drew 60 sign-ups for a performance of the touring Broadway musical The Notebook at San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre, with a $75 ticket that included a discounted orchestra seat, a pre-show mixer, and a complimentary drink. ATG's next Solo Seats event is a March 25 San Francisco performance of MJ: The Musical, with plans to further expand the concept across the U.S.

The 5th Avenue Theatre To Cut Staff Positions Amid $7.5 Million Deficit
Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre has announced plans to eliminate approximately 14 staff positions and pause some education programming as the organization addresses a significant budget deficit. The theatre is currently facing a $7.5 million deficit stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, with rising production and operating costs and a steep decline in subscription revenue straining its finances. Staff will be reduced from 55 employees to about 41, affecting many departments including marketing, box office, and other operations, with the new reductions projected to cut another $3 million from the theater's roughly $23 million budget. Executive and Artistic Director Bill Berry said the theater is launching a "stabilization and capitalization" fundraising campaign to raise $12 million over the next three years.
In a piece published on HowlRound, writer Zachary Rivera examines the ongoing arts funding battle in Florida, where state and local support for the arts has become an ideological battleground. Florida arts organizations had already been hit hard with financial losses coming out of the pandemic, and faced a further blow when Governor Ron DeSantis line-vetoed their entire $32 million grant funding in 2024. The Florida House has proposed giving $24.7 million for cultural and museum grants in its 2026-27 budget, with some funding directed toward projects Republicans favor, such as America's 250th anniversary celebration. Rivera's piece documents the Florida theatre community's efforts to fight back and advocate for the survival of their art form amid the cuts.
The Chicago Loop Alliance announced plans for a new Loop Arts District at its annual meeting, supported by nearly 90 Loop arts organizations that will develop the neighborhood as an arts and culture destination. Performing arts and cultural institutions drew more than 1.4 million people to the Loop in the fourth quarter of 2025, with an economic impact of more than $575 million — the highest in the past year. The Loop Alliance also announced it received an $800,000 two-year grant from the Department of Planning and Development to help fill vacant storefronts through community investment, while the number of vacant storefronts on State Street dropped nearly 14% in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter. The organization additionally received a $1.1 million grant to expand its social service outreach program in the Central Business District.

Toronto Star: Why Is There A Shortage Of Understudies In Toronto Theatres?
For at least three years running, shows in Toronto have been disrupted because theatres did not have adequate understudy coverage, according to the Toronto Star. The critics' notebook piece examines the systemic reasons behind the persistent shortage, which has repeatedly left productions vulnerable when cast members are unable to perform. The article explores how financial pressures and industry-wide challenges have made it difficult for Toronto theaters to maintain proper understudy rosters. The issue underscores broader structural questions facing the Canadian theatre community around performer contracts, compensation, and production sustainability.
