Hunter College Art Galleries Presents BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH Exhibit

Hunter College Art Galleries presents BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH - Anthony Panzera, Memento Mori Paintings, now on display through September 26, 2015.

THE EXHIBITION

Primarily a figurative painter and printmaker, Anthony Panzera (born 1941) has taught for more than forty years at Hunter College in the Department of Art and Art History. Because I could not stop for Death-Anthony Panzera, Memento Mori Paintings marks the first pedagogically based presentation of the artist's studio practice, displaying each painting alongside the preparatory drawings and studies that facilitated its making. Heavily influenced by Italian Renaissance masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Panzera has spent many decades building a body of work based on careful observation.

The memento mori theme, which refers to the representation of objects laden with symbolic meaning to remind the viewer of the transience of life's pleasures and the inevitability of death, has played a vital role in the history of painting. Similarly, using objects to evoke both the history of art as well as a personal history, Panzera's Memento Mori series functions not to reify any particular narrative, but instead to remind the viewer of the inescapable onward march of time.

ABOUT THE HUNTER COLLEGE ART GALLERIES

The Hunter College Art Galleries, under the auspices of the Department of Art and Art History, have been a vital aspect of the New York cultural landscape since their inception over a quarter-century ago. This exhibition builds on a long tradition of creative interchange between art history and studio art at Hunter.

Widely regarded as one of the leading art programs in the country, Hunter College's Department of Art serves both undergraduate and graduate populations, offering a full undergraduate major in Art, a BFA and an MFA in Studio Art, and an MA in Art History. In its 2012 rankings of "America's Best Graduate Schools," U.S. News & World Report ranked Hunter's Master of Fine Arts program 13th in the nation, and within this, the painting and drawing program 7th.
