HIDDEN CITY FEST to Bring DIY Music to NYC's Underground Spaces
Organizers Thomas Burns Scully and Fox Indigo aim to revive New York's house show scene with a Comedy DIY Night among the offerings.
Thomas Burns Scully, an organizer at Hidden City, said the group is putting up what he described as one of the largest underground arts festivals of its kind at the end of August, staged entirely in unofficial DIY spaces and promoted without social media.
'The music scene as a whole, but New York in particular, has been talking non stop about how venues are becoming impossible to work with and ordinary folks are being priced out of big ticket events,' Scully said. 'The DIY or house show has been making a major comeback in NYC, unofficial rooms filled with artists, sweat, and fans. They're cheaper, more community focused, kinder to artists, and the generation coming up is now discovering art of all kinds at them.'
According to Scully, the festival will bring together 'a whole festival of shows like that over two weekends at the end of August,' featuring 'incredible acts, incredible variety (one night has a fencing harpist), and incredible value (events cost $0-$12).'
Scully noted that the festival includes a Comedy DIY Night on the 28th. He said the goal of Hidden City 'is to reinstate the New York DIY/house show scene as a fixture, and build community owned artist infrastructure that can last for years to come.' Fellow organizer Fox Indigo is also involved in the effort.
