Don your swankiest costume and celebrate the spooky with the Columbus Symphony at a free, after-work Halloween Happy Hour concert with complimentary appetizers, a DJ in the lobby, cash bar, and costume contest with prizes. Conducted by CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov, the program will include themes from some of yesterday and today's most twisted tales, including:

Mussorgsky - A Night on Bald Mountain - This tone poem reflects a musical picture of a meeting of witches on St. John's Eve, a summer solstice celebration.

Weber - Overture to Der Freischütz (The Marksman) - This opera is based on the German folktale of a marksman who makes a pact with the devil for seven magic bullets that are guaranteed to strike whatever object the marksman desires. However, the seventh is at the disposal of the devil himself.

Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) - This tone poem is based on an old French superstition that "Death" appears at midnight on Halloween each year, calling forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle. When the rooster crows at dawn, all must return to their graves until the next year.

Humperdinck - Prelude and Witches Ride from Hansel and Gretel - This German opera is based on the Grimm Brothers fairytale of a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living deep in the woods in a house made of sweets.

Wagner - Overture to The Flying Dutchman - This opera portrays a sea captain cursed to ceaselessly roam the sea for his blasphemy. Every seven years, he is given the chance to break the curse by finding a woman that will be faithful to him until death.

Williams - Theme from Jaws

Williams - Themes from Star Wars

The evening will also include a reading of narrative poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.

The Columbus Symphony presents Halloween Happy Hour at the Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.) on Monday, October 30.
