Eve Best, who last year won an Olivier Award for playing the title role in
Hedda Gabler, will join the Old Vic's upcoming production of Eugene O'Neill's
A Moon for the Misbegotten, in which she will star opposite the previously announced
Kevin Spacey.
Best will play nurturing earth mother Josie to Spacey's alcoholic actor James Tyrone in the production, which will begin previews on September 15th and open on September 26th. Howard Davies, who previously directed Spacey (the artistic director of the Old Vic) in
The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, is set to stage the play, which will run into the holiday season.
Best's other West End credits include
Mourning Becomes Electra (directed by Davies) and
'Tis Pity She's a Whore. She was seen in
Hedda Gabler at the Almeida and then in its tranfer at the Duke of York's Theatre.
Oscar- and Tony Award-winner Spacey was last seen on the Old Vic's stage in
The Philadelphia Story, and also won acclaim for his turn in
Richard II. Although the last season at the Old Vic was considered by most critics to have been a disappointing one, Spacey has stated that he is as dedicated as ever to captaining the theatre in 2006-2007. In addition to
Misbegotten, next season will feature a revival of
The Entertainer, starring Robert Linsday, among other offerings.
