Dallas Superman Aiming for Broadway

The Dallas Theater Center's revival of the 1966 "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman," is looking to make it to the Broadway stage according to reports from the New York Times.

The creators of the production and Dallas Theater's artistic director Kevin Moriarty are looking to bring Superman back to his glory.

Moriarty told the NY Times that the revival is "by far the biggest production we've ever done," and has an $800,000 budget, a cast of 24 and more than 100 costume changes.

The new production will feature Superman on planet Krypton, in rurAl Smallville, and in Metropolis. At the center of the plot is the "love-hate triangle of Lois Lane, Clark Kent/Superman and Maxwell Menken, a corrupt businessman who is jealous about being dethroned as the most powerful man around," according to the NY Times.

One of the main creative decisions was to bring the story back to 1939, to capture the earliest version of the character as created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster.

"We wanted to hit a tone that was bright and joyful, not camp, not satire," Mr. Moriarty told the New York Times. "Theater artists of my generation have been in an age of irony. This piece is outside of all that."

Mr. Strouse and Mr. Adams wrote four new songs for the production.

The Dallas Morning News reviewer wrote of the new production: "If the Dallas engagement serves as the out-of-town tryout for a further life, it doesn't take X-ray vision to see a big hit hidden inside the current clutter."

Mr. Moriarty is dreaming beyond Broadway and says "I want to create a new legion of Superman fans."
