The New York Times reports that the 4th floor apartment at Manhattan's legendary Dakota which was purchased in 1961 by husband and wife Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall for under $100,000 has sold for over $21 million.

Bacall retained residency after the couple divorced in 1969 and the apartment has been on the market since shortly after her passing in 2014. Robards died in 2000.

The Dakota was completed in 1884 and was proported so-named because at the time it's location on the corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West was considered so far away from the rest of the city that it might as well be in the Dakota Territory. Through the years, the elegant building has been a home for numerous celebrities, including Lillian Gish, Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, Rudolf Nureyev and Joe Namath. John Lennon was living at the Dakota with his wife, Yoko Ono, when he was murdered by gunman Mark David Chapman in front of the building.

In a career spanning six decades, Bacall was the recipient of two Best Actress in a Musical Tony Awards (APPLAUSE, WOMAN OF THE YEAR) and an honorary Academy Award. Her first husband, film legend Humphrey Bogart, died in 1957.
