Featured cast members of "Dorian Gray: The Musical" will offer a free
performance highlighting selected numbers from the new rock musical
drama this Friday, September 16th at 8 p.m. in the café at the Virgin
Megastore Union Square, 52 East 14th St., New York."Dorian
Gray: The Musical premieres as part of the second annual New York
Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), Thursday, September 15th at
Off-Broadway's Barrow Group Theatre. Barry Gordon, who wrote the show's book, music and lyrics with Andrew Steven Ross, will present the
new show in a staging produced by BroadwayUSA! and directed by Bill Castellino. Dorian Gray: The Musical is based on Oscar Wilde's classic novel about physical beauty and spiritual ugliness. Jeff Scot Carey plays Dorian in the show, while Bob Ader, Leslie Alexander, Rodney Hicks, Brian Munn, Buzz Roddy, Idara Victor and Nicole van Giesen are also in the cast.According
to Barry Gordon (won was nominated for a Tony at age 13 for his performance in A Thousand Clowns), "In the present day of aging rock stars still touring
and presenting the same shows and performing the same stage posturings
of their youth, Dorian Gray is especially poignant, addressing the
lure of eternal youth, the battle between good and evil, and the cost
of fame." In this version of the story, Dorian "is an aspiring young
songwriter and social idealist finding his way in the Greenwich Village
of the mid-1960s. He is discovered and becomes the reluctant protégé of
an unscrupulous English rock 'n' roll promoter, who introduces him to
the life, fame and fortune he never sought," according to press notes. A photograph from his early career soon begins to reveal the wages of his sins.
In its previous form, "Dorian Gray:
The Musical" won the 2003 National Music Theater Network's Directors
Choice Award. NMTN is the parent organization of NYMF. As an official
Special Event of NYMF, "Dorian Gray" was chosen among 36 other
submissions to be presented this year.
