Bernadette Peters To Perform at New 42 Gala Honoring André De Shields and More
The event will also honor New 42 Artistic Director Mary Rose Lloyd, and New 42 Board Member Sarah Long.
Bernadette Peters will perform at New 42's 2026 Gala on Monday, June 1, at The Plaza Hotel in celebration of the performing arts organization’s 35th anniversary. The 2026 New 42 Gala will be hosted by Cheyenne Jackson, feature performances directed by Warren Carlyle, and recognize three individuals who have played a vital role in shaping the organization’s history and impact – Tony Award-winner André De Shields, New 42 Artistic Director Mary Rose Lloyd, and New 42 Board Member Sarah Long.
“I am delighted to be part of this special evening as I have great admiration for New 42 and the work they do,” said Bernadette Peters. “Having access to the performing arts can be inspirational, and New 42’s programs have opened up new worlds for young audiences. I believe that everyone should have the chance to experience the magic of live theater.”
Peters devotes her time and talents to numerous events that benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Her “pet project” Broadway Barks, co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore, is an annual, star-studded dog and cat adoption event that benefits shelter animals in the New York City and tri-state area. She is also a New York Times best-selling author who has penned three children’s books: “Broadway Barks,” “Stella is a Star,” and “Stella and Charlie: Friends Forever.” All of her proceeds from the sale of these books benefit both animal charities. The American Theater Wing honored Peters’ efforts by awarding her with the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award.
Proceeds from the 2026 New 42 Gala will support New 42’s programs that power performances at New Victory Theater, incubate new works at New 42 Studios, and pave new pathways to creative careers through artist mentorship and youth workforce development programs. The gala will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of New 42 Studios and the 30th anniversary of the opening of the New Victory Theater.
