Circle Rep Company created strong ripples in the theatrical fabric that continues to influence theatre today. Articulate Theatre Company is proud to acknowledge the impact Circle Rep has had on our ideology and ambitions, and invites you to celebrate that connection with us at Circling Back.

ABOUT CIRCLE REP: Circle Rep began in 1969 with a pulling together of artists who believed in the value of art, and were frustrated at a theatrical system that didn't acknowledge them or their stories. Founders Marshall W. Mason, Lanford Wilson, Tanya Berezin and Rob Thirkield orchestrated a group that made small into spectacular, playwrights into power, and ensemble into extraordinary. These ensemble members became extraordinarily well respected throughout the theatrical community, and many became household names, such as Lanford Wilson, A.R. Gurney, Jeff Daniels, William M. Hoffman, Judd Hirsch, Craig Lucas, Marshall W. Mason, William Mastrosimone, Paula Vogel, William Hurt, Kathy Bates, Brad Dourif, Albert Innaurato, Jonathan Hogan, Trish Hawkins, Tennessee Williams, Judith Ivey, Cherry Jones, Lou Liberatore, Danton Stone, and Richard Thomas. These artists used Circle Rep as a home base and took risks they couldn't take any where else. And when they went out, they took a piece of Circle Rep with them, pieces that they shared with other artists and other theatres. Those pieces took hold in our community and made all of us stronger for it.

ABOUT ARTICULATE: The award winning Articulate Theatre Company, with Artistic Director Cat Parker and Managing Director Brittney Venable, is an ensemble company dedicated to 'articulating' a story by every artistic means possible. Articulate has always looked to Circle Rep for inspiration. We, too, see the value in ensemble; the power of playwrights working with actors and directors that they know; in designers working with plays from the beginning, in short - the power of putting "art" in first place. Articulate is an emerging company, and like a child who has the very best examples placed before it, we will continue to look to the leadership of Circle Rep artists to remind us of what to focus on, where to put our gaze. Marshall W. Mason once said that "Innovation and tradition are the wings that give Circle Rep it's flight." If only he had known then how many ripples those wings would create. Well, we know. We're here, ready to catch that wind. And if we can soar even half the distance that Circle Rep did, we will be extraordinary. www.articulatetheatre.com
