Arizona Artists to Create Awards for 2016 Governor's Arts Awards Honorees
The Governor's Arts Awards are presented by Arizona Citizens for the Arts in partnership with the Office of the Governor. Seventy-seven artists, arts organizations, advocates, educators and businesses from 29 Arizona communities have been nominated for Governor's Arts Awards.
Winners in each of the seven categories will be presented with specially created awards by the selected artists. Artists, their area of specialty, hometown and titles of their pieces are:
• Christine Cassano, a full-time artist in Phoenix whose work focuses on exploring contrasting ideas: Adhesion (mixed media).
• Merlin Cohen of Tucson, who retired from his dental practice in 1992 to pursue sculpture: Utah Maze (Utah calcite).
• Christopher Colville, an experimental and traditional photographer in Phoenix: Untitled Work of Fire 15-26.
• Evelyn Fredericks, a stone and bronze sculptor from the Hopi Nation whose work reflects her culture's ancient roots: Twins (bronze).
• Jan Marshall of Prescott who explores human relationships with nature and through abstract paintings and drawings: Measure of Silence, II (ink on canvas).
• Hallie Mueller, originally from New England and now of Phoenix, who reflects her fascination with imagery from her travels: Rock lichen and Sante Fe bench (gouache on panel)
• Mark Pomilio of Phoenix who centers his work on visually articulating recent developments in the life sciences: Double Tartan (oil and charcoal on linen).
• Mary Shindell of Phoenix who uses a combination of traditional drawing materials including graphite, ink, paint and pastel: Q1: bougainvillea, moon (graphite, ink and prisma on Johanna).
A digital print by Prescott photographer Aurora Berger, Mile Zero, was previously chosen for the cover of the Governor's Arts Awards program and for the event collateral. The awards artwork may be viewed at http://azcitizensforthearts.org/governors-arts-awards/artwork/.
The 11th Shelley Award also will be presented at the Governor's Arts Awards to Childsplay founder David Saar. The award is named for Shelley Cohn, who spent more than 25 years as executive director of the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
The pre-awards cocktail reception, which includes a no-host bar and silent auction, begins at 5 p.m. The dinner and awards presentation starts at 6:30 and will conclude at 8:30. Individual tickets are $200 for businesses and individuals and $150 for Arizona Citizens for the Arts members. Sponsorship opportunities are available beginning at $1,500.
