Aga Khan Museum Presents BLOODSONGS By Terrill Maguire

Award-winning dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic director, Terrill Maguire explores the aspects of life that transcend different religions, cultures and times in Bloodsongs, November 7, 2018 at the Aga Khan Museum. Choreographed by Maguire, what began as a response to some exquisite music of the Middle East, from both Judaic and Islamic sources, has evolved into an alternative response to the pervasive greed, conflict, intolerance, and cruelty in the world.

Bloodsongs was first developed over 20 years ago, having originated with a series of intensive creative workshops involving dancers and musicians. The piece explores aspects of life that transcend different religions, cultures, and times; seeking the universal elements that unite, rather than divide us. Maguire's interest lies in investigating eternal human concerns, through movement and music that is physically and emotionally resonant.

"We live in tumultuous times, where divisiveness prevails, and even eclipses, tolerance and diversity. I am interested in the way that imagery and the kinesthetic response might affect attitudes," says Maguire. "Can we humanize the 'other' through the depiction of both discord and beauty? Can dance and music make a positive difference? If I did not think the answer a probable 'yes,' I would not continue the quest, challenging as it is."

The themes and imagery of Bloodsongs, expressing the beauty and challenges of human relationships, remain relevant and compelling. This dance and live music performance work is performed by; Danielle Baskerville, Tyler Gledhill, Robert Kingsbury, Terrill Maguire, Andrea Nann, Nicole Rose Bond, and Brendan Wyatt. Musical performances by; Roula Said (vocals in Arabic, Hebrew, and Yemeni; percussion), Derek Grey (percussion), and Ernie Tollar (winds) with costume design by Denis Joffre.

Terrill Maguire is an award-winning dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic director. She has been an advocate for the integration of the arts into everyday life and mainstream society wherever she has lived - in her native California, in New York City, in her long-time home, Toronto, and in remote communities in the James Bay region of northern Ontario. She has created projects at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Ontario Museum, Beau-Xi Gallery, Gallery 1313, the Art Gallery at York University, and Blackwood Gallery at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, among others.
