African Burial Ground Announces National Monument Essay And Poetry Contest The African Burial Ground National Monument is excited to announce the 2017/2018 African Burial Ground National Monument's short essay and poetry contest!

African Burial Ground is soliciting participation by students of Elementary, Junior High, High School, and College levels. Three winners will be chosen from each grade level, and winners will receive a gift certificate, African Burial Ground National Monument tour for them, their families and friends, and an opportunity to showcase their work during Black History Month celebration at the African Burial Ground National Monument.

Details:

  • Competition is open to students of elementary, junior high, high school and college levels.
  • Three winners will be chosen from each category. 1st place winners will receive a $50 gift certificate at the African Burial Ground's partnering Eastern National Bookstore. 2nd place winners will receive a $30 gift certificate, and 3rd place winners will receive a $20 gift certificate. All winners will receive a private tour of the African Burial Ground National Monument for themselves and up to 15 of their friends and family.

Rules:

  • All entries must address how the African Burial Ground National Monument inspires and empowers one to re-examine history so that one can achieve a more holistic understanding of slavery's role in the development of New York City.
  • Short essays entries must be 750 words or less. Poetry entries must be 150 words or less.
  • All submissions must have an entry form attached with original work (see reverse).
  • All Entries must be postmarked or electronically received by January 15th 2017. Winners will be announced at the Black History Month celebration on February 24th.

  2. Save the entry form to your computer.
  3. Email the park site, attaching your submission and entry form. Write "Poetry/Essay Contest" in email subject line.
