As first reported here on BroadwayWorld.com on February 19th, the news about The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has been announced, confirming a scheduled May 2nd opening at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The show, which has been a sold out hit at the Second Stage Theatre will begin previews on April 15 according to an article in Variety. This opening date makes the show just elligible for the 2005 Tony Awards, the opening deadline for which is a few days later. Spelling Bee is scheduled to close on March 20th in its current home.

In the show, six young people on the edge of puberty strive to become adults in this funny, tender, sardonic musical by the composer of Falsettos. These outsiders use competition to define themselves, apart from their crazy families, while their struggle to escape childhood is overseen by grown-ups who never completely succeeded in escaping it themselves.

The cast from the Second Stage Theatre production includes: Derrick Baskin, Deborah S. Craig, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Dan Fogler, Lisa Howard, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Jose Llana, Jay Reiss, Sarah Saltzberg. Choreography by Dan Knechtges and Directed by James Lapine.

BroadwayWorld was one of the first NY press outlets to cover the show back in its earlier regional run in Barrington. For BroadwayWorld.com's first take on the show, click here. Read about what the critics had to say about the show's Off-Broadway run in the Broadway Pulse.
