Noises Off, by Michael Frayn, is playing at Center for the Arts Theatre. Directed by Dan Schuster, the comedic farce Noises Off is the final production of the season.

Noises Off tells the story of a company of second-rate British actors from three different perspectives: final dress rehearsal, from back stage of a performance a month later, and finally a performance two months later. Famous for the witty dialogue and a revolving set, sardines and malfunctioning doors, Noises Off has had a long and celebrated life among regional theatre. It opened in London in 1982, followed by a 1983 Broadway production, winning the Tony Award for Best Play. Subsequently a movie version was made in 1992. Actors who have been associated with Noises Off include Michael Caine, John Ritter, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, Victor Garber, Lynn Redgrave and Patti LuPone.

In general the production was fun and enjoyable, but there were pacing issues in act one and act three had some unnecessary set chewing. The costumes, by Alison Babb and assistance by Jessica Fisher, were absolutely lovely- each perfect for the character and story. The set, however, was cockeyed and cramped. It swayed so much it constantly looked as if it would topple. This was surprising, as WCFTA has consistently built quality sets that patrons have come to love and expect. The stunts, by the incomparable Danette Baker, served the text beautifully.

Cameron Carlson did some of his best work as he played director Lloyd Dallas. Dylan Mark Lewis, as Freddie, had a perfect balance of humanity and comedy. He was genuine and funny without being fake. The cast also included Mary Lou Phipps-Winfrey, Damian Padilla, Briley Meek, Molly Tully, Jessica Heidrick, Lewis D. Mize and MJT hall of famer Don Wineke as the drunken cad Selsdon Mowbray.

Noises Off is playing for one more weekend at WCFTA. Performances are Friday April 24 and Saturday April 25 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday the 26th at 2:00 p.m. For tickets call (316)315-0151 or visit www.wcfta.com for more information.
