The Theatre Centre and Ahuri Theatre to Present THIS IS THE POINT

Created in Residency at The Theatre Centre by the award-winning Ahuri Theatre (Ralph + Lina), THIS IS THE POINT is a joyous and unflinching portrait of four individuals whose lives have been shaped, in part, by cerebral palsy. The new play about love, sex and disability runs November 4-20, 2016.

Dan and Christina, currently expecting their third child, are parents searching for the best way their disabled son Bruno can share his voice. Tony, whose original play was the inspiration for THIS IS THE POINT, is a non-verbal adult who won't shut up. Liz, his long-time romantic partner, is grappling with the judgements that society makes about their love and sexuality.

THIS IS THE POINT addresses misconceptions related to disability by sharing the ordinary and extraordinary stories of these two real-life couples. With a verbatim theatre quality and physical comedy delivery, a series of staged conversations and theatrical re-enactments-from getting Bruno ready for school in the morning, to Tony breaking up with his computer because he doesn't like the simulated voice-THIS IS THE POINT debates questions of representation, the nature of companionship, and how people of different abilities can connect with each other on equal terms.

In order to further open up conversations about inclusivity, equity and diversity, a number of activities have been programmed during the run of THIS IS THE POINT: artist and activist Syrus Marcus Ware will be throwing an all accessible dance party with three surprise pop-up performances (Nov 19); Tangled Arts + Disability will facilitate a series of drop-in art making workshops, led by Gloria Swain; and contemporary media art focused collective, MICE Magazine will launch their second issue with an all-day symposium around accessibility (Nov 12). The run will also include ASL interpreted performances (Nov 12 & 19) and Audio Visually described performances (Nov 10 & 17).

The point is, everyone deserves and desires to experience humanity in their life.
