Center for Performance Research (CPR) will host its Annual Benefit Performance and Celebration tonight, May 19, 2015 at 6:30pm. The evening will commemorate CPR's Sixth Anniversary and the recent completion of its new LED theatrical lighting system, procured through the generous support of New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs with additional backing from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. Since 2009 CPR has supported more than 20,000 hours of subsidized rehearsal space, 3,488 hours of arts and movement classes for adults and kids, and 440 evenings of performance. Last year alone, CPR served over 300 individual renters and reached an audience of 2,572. Join us in celebration with a pre-show toast and very special performances by Joanna Kotze and Niall Jones, followed by an after party with drinks and refreshments provided by local Brooklyn restaurant No.7 North and Sixpoint Brewery. Emmy Award winner George Daugherty will conduct in his Philharmonic debut, and Academy Award winner and New York Philharmonic Board Member Whoopi Goldberg will appear as a special guest. Godwin's previous collaborations include Julie Taymor, David Bowie, the Muppets & even Aerosmith. A 2014 Jim Henson Award recipient, Godwin utilizes remarkable puppets, masks & mystical neo-noir visuals to tell a story set in a parallel, near-future NYC filled with ghosts, elemental spirits & evil demigods. The great Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi (1916-1996), best known for his passionate, socially committed films in the post-World War II era, and actor Tatsuya Nakadai (b. 1932) worked together on nine notable films, chief among them the epic anti-war drama The Human Condition (1959-1961). From May 15 through 24, 2015, Museum of the Moving Image will present all nine of these films-all in 35mm-in the series Portraying the Human Condition: The Films of Masaki Kobayashi and Tatsuya Nakadai to honor this remarkable screen partnership. Nakadai, in his third annual appearance at the Museum, will participate in discussions with screenings of The Human Condition Part I (May 16) and the Cannes prize-winning samurai revenge tale Harakiri (May 24).
