Earlier this week, The Al Hirschfeld Foundation celebrated Louise Hirschfeld Cullman at a reception at The National Arts Club in New York City. All proceeds from the event benefited the non-profit Al Hirschfeld Foundation, for which Louise Hirschfeld Cullman served as founding president for 12 years after the death of her husband in 2003. Hell in a Handbag Productions concludes its 15th Anniversary Season with its most popular show ever: the holiday hit RUDOLPH THE RED-HOSED REINDEER 2017 by David Cerda*, co-directed by Becca Holloway and AJ Wright*. Handbag's irreverent parody of the 1967 Rankin Bass children's television special plays now through December 30, 2017 at Mary's Attic, 5400 N. Clark St. in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood. On May 4, the 2016 Tony nominees flocked to the Paramount Hotel, where they met with the press for the first time since getting the big news. 'Dance is a metaphor for expression, for freedom. In Footloose we use dance to express ourselves when we have no words. [As characters] we are all closed off, and finally at the end of the story, we are loosened; we become individuals again.' Speaking is Kristen Martin, who plays Ariel in Maine State Music Theatre's final season production of Footloose, which runs from August 6-23. Her co-star, Eric Sciotto, agrees that his character, Ren, is 'on a journey to find himself after being abandoned by his father. Ren sees in Ariel a troubled soul who reminds him of himself. They recognize immediately that they are kindred spirits.'

The most wonderful time of the year is underway as Goodman Theatre's A Christmas Carol begins its 36th annual production. Directing the holiday favorite for the first time, Henry Wishcamper's production features all-new on stage magic-set elements, special effects and more. The cast of 27 (below, includes 14 new and 13 returning cast members) stars Larry Yando, who most recently appeared in Mary Zimmerman's production of The Jungle Book as Shere Khan, in his sixth turn as Ebenezer Scrooge and 8-year-old Matthew Abraham as Tiny Tim for the second year. A Christmas Carol runs now through December 28 in the Goodman's Albert Theatre. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!

After a lovely day off on Monday in Little Rock where a bunch of cast members rented a boat and went to Hot Springs for some r & r, we headed to the airport at 4 a.m. on Tuesday for our early flights to Ottawa, connecting through Chicago. I got to Ottawa around noonand was in my bed by12:30 and took a 4 hour nap!!

Just last night, the five-time Tony Award nominated Broadway musical ROCK OF AGES hosted a Military Tribute Night, at which 160 Active Duty, Retired & Veteran members of the U.S. Military were given free tickets to the show, and one Veteran in attendance received the Grand Prize of a new mortgage-free home, courtesy of The Boot Campaign and Benchmark Mortgage. BroadwayWorld was there for the special event and we bring you photo coverage below!

Westport Country Playhouse, Westport, Connecticut, will stage this lesser-known work by Jonathan Larson, June 23 through July 18. The director is Scott Schwartz, who helmed the original off-Broadway production of 'tick, tick... BOOM!,' winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding musical.

Academy and Tony Award-Winning actor and photographer Joel Grey celebrated the release of his new book, titled 1.3 - Images from My Phone, at Barnes at Noble Tribeca (97 Warren St. at Greenwich St.) on Tuesday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m. The book, published by powerHouse, is Grey's third published book of photographs and will be available in stores nationwide June 2.
