On the Twentieth Century Photos - Broadway

The glamorous passenger train Twentieth Century Limited, which ran between New York and Chicago between 1902 and 1967, is the main setting for the musical screwball comedy ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY now playing through August 27 at the Pan-Andreas Theatre, 5119 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90038. Based partly on the 1930s film and play of the same name, the musical, with book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Cy Coleman, is part operetta, part farce, and part screwball comedy telling the story of the behind-the-scenes relationship between Lily, a temperamental actress and Oscar, a bankrupt theatre producer. The duo, played with great skill and comedic timing by Alena Bernardi and Wade Kelley, recount the tale of their adventure traveling from Chicago to New York in the 1930s as Oscar tries to cajole the glamorous Hollywood star into playing the lead in his new, but not-yet-written drama, and perhaps to rekindle their romance.

Warm up on a cold winter's night with Broadway's hottest couple, Orfeh and Andy Karl in their Feinstein's/54 Below debut, Legally Bound (December 8-14). After love at first sight during the couple's time in Saturday Night Fever on Broadway, then getting married in 2001, this duo has established themselves as individuals and together as a theatre power couple. They famously appeared alongside one another in Legally Blonde, earning Orfeh a Tony nomination for her role as Paulette in 2007. Andy received back to back Tony nods himself, one for his star turn as the title character in Rocky in 2014, and another for his role as Bruce Granit in the Broadway revival of On the Twentieth Century in 2015. He most recently starred as Phil Connors in the West End's Groundhog Day musical, bound for Broadway in 2017. Reuniting together again onstage, Orfeh and Andy Karl will be joined by musical director Steven Jamail for an unforgettable evening of chart-toppers, show-stoppers, and a sprinkling of holiday magic. Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright.

Flat Rock Playhouse's presentation of CHASING RAINBOWS: THE ROAD TO OZ world premiere chronicles the life of a young Judy Garland. This exciting new musical explores her extraordinary journey from vaudeville to Hollywood to stardom which culminated in one of the most popular films of all time, THE WIZARD OF OZ. The production runs now through December 19, 2015 at Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. IMPORTANT HATS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, the new comedy by Emmy Award nominee Nick Jones, directed by Tony Award nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel, is now in previews and opens Monday, November 23, 2015 at The Studio at Stage II - Harold and Mimi Steinberg New Play Series at New York City Center - Stage II (131 West 55th Street). It was 20 years ago when Sarah Jessica Parker starred Off-Broadway in A.R. Gurney's off-beat comedy about a man and his dog, SLYVIA. Just last night her hubby Matthew Broderick had the honor of opening in SLYVIA on Broadway, joined by Annaleigh Ashford as Sylvia, with Julie White and Robert Sella. On Friday, October 16, The Chernuchin Theatre, one of the theatres housed at The American Theatre for Actors (ATA, 314 West 54th Street, New York City) was named for beloved Broadway legend and two-time Tony Award winner John Cullum. He is best known as Holling, the bartender in 'Northern Exposure.'

New York City's Drama Book Shop hosted a panel discussion on the life & career of Madeline Kahn (1942-99), the Oscar-nominated, Emmy & Tony-winning actress on June 11, 2015. Star of such hit films as Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Paper Moon & Clue & Broadway shows On the Twentieth Century, The Sisters Rosensweig & Two by Two, Kahn is the subject of a new biography, MADELINE KAHN: Being the Music • A Life (University Press of Mississippi) by William V. Madison, moderated the panel.

After the ceremony is when the real fun started though, as most of the evening's celebrity guests headed to the annual Tonys Party at the Carlyle Hotel, hosted by O&M Co. The Twentieth-Century Way, Tom Jacobson's acclaimed two-person play about homosexual entrapment in Los Angeles at the turn of the 20th century, will premiere Off-Broadway tomorrow, June 3 at 8:00 p.m. Directed by The Theatre @ Boston Court's Michael Michetti, and starring Will Bradley and Robert Mammana, the play began previews on May 28, 2015 at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (224 Waverly Place, NYC). The Outer Critics Circle, the organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway announced the nominees this morning for the 2014-15 season. The first major Broadway/Off-Broadway award nominees of the New York theater season, the organization is celebrating its 64th season of bestowing awards of excellence in the field of theater. The Outer Critics Circle is an association with members affiliated with more than ninety newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, Internet, and theatre publications in America and abroad. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway production of On the Twentieth Century now technically opens on Sunday, March 15, 2015, as a result of Peter Gallagher missing a week of performances due to a sinus infection. Sickness didn't stop the show however, and the company celebrated their opening on the originally planned March 12- last night! Check out photos from the curtain call below!
