Americans were listening to 'Goodnight, Irene' and Bing and Gary Crosby's interpretation of a 1914 song by Irving Berlin, 'Play a Simple Melody.' And Berlin's new musical, Call Me Madam, was opening at New York's Imperial Theater with an advance of over one million dollars, by far the largest in Broadway history.

RUTHLESS! THE MUSICAL originally opened Off-Broadway in 1992, created as an over-the-top dark comedy spoof of the films The Bad Seed and All About Eve, and well-known Broadway musicals Gypsy and Annie. Similar to the dark comedy in musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd where characters are murdered and then eaten, RUTHLESS! THE MUSICAL centers on 8-year old Tina Denmark, who knows she was born to play the lead in her school's third grade show and will do anything to win the part. And I do mean anything. Now onstage at Theatre Palisades, directed by Alta Abbott who first fell in love with the show during its 1993 West Coast premiere at the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills, I can only say that the over-the-top production sometimes seemed so dark that the comedy became invisible.

Rubicon Theatre's 20th Anniversary Season culminates with a two-piano version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's soaring epic South Pacific, helmed by award-winning director KATHARINE FARMER and featuring a cast of 28 led by Tony honoree BEN DAVIS (Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme) and MADISON CLAIRE PARKS (Luisa in The Fantasticks Off-Broadway).

This Thursday, December 7 marks the anniversary of the air raid on Pearl Harbor in which Japanese planes attacked a United States Naval Air Base in the Territory of Hawaii in the Pacific. Thousands of Americans lost their lives or were injured, and more than 300 ships were destroyed. The event brought citizens together in support of U.S. participation in the war. President Roosevelt addressed the nation, calling the event, 'a day that will live in infamy.'

My Fair Lady officially opened on Thursday night at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre and BroadwayWorld at the Gypsy Robe ceremony before the production's opening night performance. We're taking you behind the scenes with recipient Matt Wall below!

South Pacific runs April 5 - June 17, 2018, at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The press opening is scheduled for Thursday, April 12 at 8:00 p.m.

The Theatre Group at SBCC opens the 17/18 season with Cole Porter's sparkling musical, HIGH SOCIETY, July 12-29 in the Garvin Theatre. 

Regarded as one of most popular musicals of all time, the classic My Fair Lady turns 60 and receives this month a new theatrical production signed by the Director Jorge Takla. With a great cast and live orchestra, the show - based on the classic Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw - tells the story of an aristocrat teacher, Mr. Henry Higgins, who takes up the challenge to transform the poor Eliza Doolittle, street vendor without any refinement, in a society lady. With luxurious scenery and costumes, the show will have place at the Santander Theatre, in Sao Paulo, between August 27 and November 6, 2016.

The summer concludes with South Pacific, an ever-topical story of love in the time of war, and one of the most heralded musicals of all time. Since its premiere in 1949, it has won countless awards, including the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Awards both for its original run and its 2008 revival. Featuring some of the greatest songs in musical theater history, including 'Some Enchanted Evening,' 'I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy,' and 'A Cockeyed Optimist,' this remarkable production will stay with you for years to come.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's award-winning South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. The musical is set on an island paradise during World War II and tells two parallel love stories against the dangers of prejudice and war and the importance of valuing diversity. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949. A 25th anniversary production of the imaginative, fractured-fairy tale musical 'Into the Woods' by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim will be staged at the theater where Sondheim was an apprentice in 1950, Westport Country Playhouse, in Westport, CT, through May 26. Directed by Mark Lamos, The Playhouse's artistic director, the musical will open the historic theater's 82nd season. It is co-produced with Baltimore's CENTERSTAGE.

Actors Equity held a celebration for the 60th Anniversary of the Gypsy Robe on Monday night, October 25th at Sequoia on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport where past gypsy robe winners came back to reminisce and to celebrate.
