BWW Reviews: The Transcendent Voice of Ageless and Evergreen JUDY COLLINS Once Again Enchants Café CarlyleBWW Reviews: The Transcendent Voice of Ageless and Evergreen JUDY COLLINS Once Again Enchants Café Carlyle
by Alix Cohen - May 6, 2015

Judy Collins, who celebrated her 76th birthday on May 1, has been entertaining us for 56 years "not including childhood." A formidable contributor to the soundtrack of Boomer lives, her transcendent voice conjures memories like few others of any generation. Collins' current show at Cafe Carlyle (which opened last night and runs until May 16) mines familiar territory like evocative comfort food, including retold tales that sometimes go on too long. Many songs take on new coloring both vocally and in terms of changed context, i.e. that of a mature woman looking back. (more...)

BWW Review: Sondheim's Storytelling Shines in Winter Park Playhouse's PUTTING IT TOGETHERBWW Review: Sondheim's Storytelling Shines in Winter Park Playhouse's PUTTING IT TOGETHER
by Matt Tamanini - May 6, 2015

Stephen Sondheim is the greatest writer that the musical theatre has ever known. Now, obviously, intelligent minds can disagree, but if you do, I'm sorry, you're wrong. From story integration, to compelling characterizations, to insightful and witty lyrics, to complex and engaging melodies, no one has ever done it better than the man that many call "The Master." Sondheim's genius comes from the fact that every syllable he writes, and every note he composes, is in service of the story that he is telling; which is why I am always apprehensive of seeing one of the numerous revues of his work. Though he has been intimately involved in such shows as SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM, MARRY ME A LITTLE, and PUTTING IT TOGETHER, which is running through May 9th at The Winter Park Playhouse, it often feels slightly disingenuous to see his songs, which fit so seamlessly amidst their original works, shoe-horned into completely contrived circumstances. Fortunately, under the direction of Roy Alan (who also choreographed), WPP's production makes each of Sondheim's beloved songs feel fresh, exciting, and (nearly) wholly original. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Sequel to The Crucible ABIGAIL/1702 Mesmerizes at ICTBWW Reviews: Sequel to The Crucible ABIGAIL/1702 Mesmerizes at ICT
by Don Grigware - May 5, 2015

The creation of Arthur Miller's now classic The Crucible about the Salem witch trials of 1692 was influenced by the McCarthy era of the 50s. It provided an intensely ferocious perspective on the unjust distortion and destruction of human life. In Salem, Massachusetts it was a religious issue - did you believe in God or the Devil Incarnate? McCarthyism was about Americans and their supposed involvement with the Communist Party. Religion and politics should be private issues, but in a community riddled with guilt about morality, there is no such thing as personal. Your way of life is an open book for all to judge and condemn. Roberto Aguirre-Acasa has penned an imagined sequel to The Crucible entitled Abigail/1702 about protagonist/witch namer Abigail Williams (Jennifer Cannon), who escapes Salem and tries to find salvation after her crimes. The action picks up ten years later in 1702, and as a thought-provoking piece now onstage at ICT, Long Beach, it works quite well under the expert guidance of director Caryn Dasai and with the help of five outstanding performances. BWW Recap: 'The Watch' Arrives at Lallybroch on OUTLANDERBWW Recap: 'The Watch' Arrives at Lallybroch on OUTLANDER
by Kara McCoy - May 2, 2015

Tonight's OUTLANDER picked up right where Episode 12 left off, which was great, because last week's 'Lallybroch' ended with one doozy of a cliffhanger. Three guys pulling pistols on Jamie, the Laird of Lallybroch, mind you, in his own home! Well, I never! Before the situation can escalate any further, Jenny walks in, clearly unfazed by the scene in front of her. Not only that, but she seems to know the pistol-wielding intruders. They may be friendly, but not that friendly, because Jenny introduces Jamie to them as her cousin. Jamie catches on quickly, calling himself MacTavish. One of the newly arrived crew tells Jenny that they thought Jamie was a robber--because what else could Jamie possibly be, right?--so, heh, sorry for the misunderstanding. (more...)

Into The Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into The Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.
