Following celebrated seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway, Lee Hallís The Pitmen Painters will at last enjoy a West End season, opening at the Duchess Theatre on Wednesday 5 October.

In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint Ė prolifically. Within a few years avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collectors; but every day they continued to work, as before, down the mineÖ

The Pitmen Painters is highly amusing, deeply moving and always entertaining as it examines the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things.

BWW Interview: Britt Michael Gordon of ASSASSINS at FreeFall Theatre
by Desiree Fantal - Oct 17, 2016

I have what I like to call 'theatre crushes;' gender nonspecific affections that occur whenever I see a stage performance that greatly interests or moves me to the point where I want to see everything that actor does for the rest of their career. I'm unashamedly open about these reasons for theatrical fangirling, and with three shows back to back to back in the bay area, it seems I have a new one. (more...)

Enchantment abounds as the season continues with the Bay Area Premiere of Marc Norman, Tom Stoppard and Lee Hall's effervescent romance, Shakespeare in Love, coming to MTC this holiday season. Lady Viola de Lesseps adores plays, especially those by a young writer named Will Shakespeare, but can only look on longingly as men and boys perform them. Will, meanwhile, has his own struggles: his inspiration fled, his debts and unwritten commissions piling up¬Öuntil he meets an unknown young player named Thomas Kent, who speaks his words as he's always dreamed they'd be spoken, and a beautiful woman named Viola, who could be just the muse he needs. Under the direction of MTC artistic director Jasson Minadakis, this stage adaptation of the beloved film finds its true essence: a love letter to the power of theatre and the imagination. (more...)
