A man, a woman, a marriage…which lasted five years. The story, told in the exuberant and heart-rending songs of Jason Robert Brown, tells the story of the five years of a marriage, from intense love to a final, painful separation. However, there’s an intriguing twist: the man lives the five years from beginning to end, but the woman lives the five years backward, from end to beginning. Their “times” correspond only once, signaled by a remarkable duet.

A “must-see…and hear.”

Photo Coverage: First look at Short North Stage's THE LAST 5 YEARS
by Jerri Shafer - May 9, 2016

To help celebrate the start of Short North Stage's fifth year, we present the contemporary hit musical The Last Five Years. A cult favorite, especially among young audiences, this musical by Robert Jason Brown tells the story of a twenty-something novelist Jamie Wellerstein and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The musical explores their five-year relationship through a novel device: Cathy's story is told in the reverse chronological order-beginning at the end of their marriage-while Jamie's begins just after they've met. The characters never directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle, when their timelines intersect. (more...)

BWW Review: LAST FIVE YEARS at ACT
by Harmony Wheeler - May 20, 2016

Relationships are complicated because people are complicated. Take Jason Robert Brown's 'Last Five Years,' which opened Wednesday evening at American Conservatory Theater. The 85-minute, two-person musical is simple. A couple recounts the rise and fall of their love. But just when you think you know to whom fault really belongs, Brown gives his audience another heart wrenching song to balance the scales. That Cathy and Jamie play out their stories with close to no interaction at all, and in opposite chronological order, only makes it all the more curious. And then there's the fact that the show is somewhat autobiographical and you have to wonder if Brown is living proof that we are our own worst critics. Simple, but complicated. (more...)
