A man, a woman, a marriage…which lasted five years. The story, told in the exuberant and heart-rending songs of Jason Robert Brown, tells the story of the five years of a marriage, from intense love to a final, painful separation. However, there’s an intriguing twist: the man lives the five years from beginning to end, but the woman lives the five years backward, from end to beginning. Their “times” correspond only once, signaled by a remarkable duet.

A “must-see…and hear.”

Critic's Choice: Nashville Theatre's New Season Continues at Breakneck Pace
by Jeffrey Ellis - Sep 9, 2016

It's another one of those perplexing and invigorating weekends in Nashville theater as some of the season's most anticipated shows open - and theater-goers find themselves sometimes making a "Sophie's Choice" decision in some cases when the options somehow seem overwhelming. And as confounding as that can be for audiences, it once again shows that the theater scene in these parts remains as vital and as artistically challenging as everÂ… (more...)

BWW Review: SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD Offers Look At Early Jason Robert Brown
by Frank Benge - Sep 6, 2016

SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD is a musical theatre piece by Jason Robert Brown. Originally produced Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in 1995, this was Jason Robert Brown's first produced show. It is neither a book musical or a revue and has been called a 'song cycle', which was put together out of songs he had written for other venues and events. I was very much struck by the fact that many of these songs sounded like they could fit into his latter shows such as 'The Last Five Years' or 'Parade'. In the final analysis, calling this a musical is a stretch. What it all boils down to is a series of songs very loosely connected by the theme: 'the moment of decision.' (more...)

BWW Review: Love Isn't Enough In THE LAST FIVE YEARS
by Erin Kong - Sep 20, 2016

Watching the story of 'The Last Five Years' is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know the impending tragedy, yet it is impossible to look away. It is a love story that is heartbreakingly relatable and incredibly painful to watch. 'The Last Five Years' is told through the eyes of Jamie Wellerstein, a novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, an aspiring actress. Cathy tells the story in reverse-chronological order, beginning with their break-up, and Jamie tells the story in chronological order from when they first fall in love. (more...)
