381 guests filled The Island Hotel in Newport Beach for Laguna Playhouse's annual fundraising gala. This year's event, themed Theatre Changes Lives, raised a record $600,000 in support of the Playhouse's mission to enrich lives through the magic of live theatre, to provide educational opportunities for children and adults, and to create experiences that stimulate cultural and social interaction and inspire our community. Proceeds from the event help cover the operating costs of the 96-year old icon, one of the oldest continuing operating theaters west of the Mississippi.  Within the funds raised that evening, $90,000 was raised for the Suzanne and James Mellor Laguna Playhouse Tribute Fund, which will provide theatre experiences for youth by providing tickets to performances and to cover the cost of transporting youth groups to the theatre. BWW Review: GABRIEL: Better Angels Take Flight at Stoneham Theatre

Stoneham Theatre seriously ups its game with Moira Buffini's 1997 play GABRIEL, a World War II tale of survival and intrigue, where the fate of a family may rest upon the identity of a mysterious stranger. Producing Artistic Director Weylin Symes directs a cast that includes some of Boston theater's most stellar actors, as well as a nine-year old member of 'the young company' making her Mainstage debut in a pivotal role. Scenic designer Matthew Lazure's evocative set takes us to The Island of Guernsey, to a rustic farmhouse lacking the creature comforts formerly enjoyed by the family before the Nazi occupation. For its final performances at 719 Race St., Cincinnati Shakespeare Company chose William Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST, one of the last plays the playwright penned alone in 1610-11. Leading the cast is founding company member Nicholas Rose as magician Prospero who has landed on an island with his young daughter Miranda for twelve years after being overthrown as the Duke of Milan. Interested in regaining his dukedom, Prospero orchestrates a shipwreck amidst a storm, which open the play. (more...)

The venerable Ogunquit Playhouse, which is celebrating its 85th Anniversary season is once again joining forces with Rotary International to continue in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide by 2018. The annual Rotary Night is scheduled for Thursday, June 1, for the evening performance of Mamma Mia! Joining the fight is as easy as buying a ticket to the international hit show! A portion of every ticket purchased for that evening's performance will be donated to Rotary International.
