by BWW News Desk - Mar 13, 2015

Against the backdrop of an America torn by World War II, cultures and communities clash when a Japanese American islander is accused of murder. This hauntingly lyrical saga-adapted from David Guterson's acclaimed story of mystery, love, and identity-deftly shifts from courtroom to strawberry fields to bloody battlefront, digging for hard truths buried in a forgotten history. Set in 1954 in a Puget Sound community divided among fishermen and farmers, whites and Japanese, SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS is at once a courtroom drama, a mystery, a love story, and, in flashbacks, a social history freighted with the angry residue of World War II and the exclusion of Japanese Americans. SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS appears at BPA tonight, March 13 - 29, 2015. Scroll down for a first look at the cast onstage! (more...)

BWW Reviews: Diversity Reigns in Cabaret Through Sublime Shows From Barbara Malley, Robin Kradles, and Donna HayesBWW Reviews: Diversity Reigns in Cabaret Through Sublime Shows From Barbara Malley, Robin Kradles, and Donna Hayes
by Billie Roe - Mar 12, 2015

When Cole Porter wrote, 'Anything Goes,' he could have easily been referring to New York cabaret circa the 2000-sies. One of the joys of attending and reviewing cabaret shows in the Big Apple these days is that every performing style, show theme, cultural perspective, political point of view, race, gender, and sexual preference is represented on a stage. Some cabaret purists may not agree, but the genre seems to have no boundaries in terms of what is acceptable and what is not. And as long as a show is entertaining, who cares about boundaries and strict definitions of what works in the art form? Here are reviews of three recent shows from Barbara Malley, Robin Kradles, and Donna Hayes that reflect the delicious diversity that is cabaret. (more...)

British Museum to Open New Exhibit by Aboriginal Australian Artist, TodayBritish Museum to Open New Exhibit by Aboriginal Australian Artist, Today
by BWW News Desk - Mar 11, 2015

This Asahi Shimbun display features work by contemporary Aboriginal Australian artist, Wukun Wanambi (b.1962). Wukun, an important Yolngu artist from Yirrkala in Eastern Arnhem Land, produces contemporary work firmly grounded in a traditional form. He focusses on making larrakitj, memorial poles. Larrakitj are derived from painted hollow log coffins: such coffins used to be made as the final resting place of the dry bones of important people, and were painted with clan designs. Now Yolngu artists use the form – hollow logs painted with traditional techniques and designs – to convey some of their core understandings of the world to the outsiders with whom they have had, increasingly, to engage. Wukun says: “The outside surface of things hides what is inside. I want to share what is hidden. ... I have wanted to share this understanding with non-Indigenous people for a long time.” (more...)
