When the title of the musical is followed by 'based on the book/film...', there tends to be one of two reactions- excitement (LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, MARY POPPINS, RAGTIME) or dread (SISTER ACT, GHOST, CARRIE). And while the Broadway-bound BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE, now playing through May 10th at the Delaware Theatre Company, does not quite reach the level of LA CAGE or RAGTIME, it's hard to resist the feel-good charm bubbling off the stage. Jonathan Groff will receive the Point HORIZON Award at tonight's (April 13) Point Honors gala at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. The gala program also features the presentation of the Point Courage Award to actor Jeffrey Tambor. The evening is a benefit for Point Foundation, the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit. (more...)

Red Branch Theatre Company (RBTC) will kick off its 2015 season entitled Coming of Age with the TONY Award-winning alt-rock musical, Spring Awakening. Karl, who has previously been seen on Broadway in JERSEY BOYS, LEGALLY BLONDE, 9 TO FIVE, and others shot to stardom when he was cast in the title role of Ahrens and Flaherty's $17 million adaptation of the Sylvester Stallone film. Karl reflects on being cast in the role, the physical and emotional toll the role took on him, and the life and career altering journey the experience was for him. He also discusses his excitement to be working alongside Kristin Chenowith in Roundabout Theater Company's ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (the first Broadway job for which he didn't have to audition), and tells hilarious stories about collaborating with his wife Orfea on the Jerry Mitchell helmed 2007 production of LEGALLY BLONDE. Dan Lauria, the revered actor and now author of the new play DINNER WITH THE BOYS -- to be given its Off-Broadway debut this spring at the Acorn Theatre on Theater Row (410 W. 42 St.) -- will be recognized for his contributions to television and athletics: on Friday, April 10 he will receive the Distinguished American Award from the New Haven County Chapter of the National Football Foundation in Connecticut, and the beloved television series, THE WONDER YEARS in which Mr. Lauria starred for several years, will be honored with a special award on this week's TV Land Awards. Also on Tuesday, April 14 at noon, Mr. Lauria will be guest speaker before the Broadway Association in Manhattan. (more...)
