BWW Review: So Good It's Addictive...ACT 1's REEFER MADNESS
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 19, 2017

'Over-the-top' and 'larger-than-life' are but two of the descriptive phrases that may be used in reference to both director Jason Lewis and his latest theatrical project Reefer Madness the Musical - and, in both instances, they are equally justified. In all honesty, who else better than he to helm a production of the thoroughly madcap and deliciously campy musical now onstage at Darkhorse Theater through this weekend as the final show of ACT 1's 2016-17 season? BWW Review: STAR-CROSSED by Barbara Dee
by Bonnie Lynn Wagner - Jun 19, 2017

I was also excited about the book because it revolved around the world of theatre, and that always gets my attention in a book. Mattie doesn't want to try out for a big role, even though her teacher thinks she should, and when the cast's Romeo quits--and there are no understudies--Mattie finds herself cast in the role because she knows the part and had been helping the previous Romeo understand the show. But now she's, *gulp* playing lead against Gemma, the new girl at school who has changed her world and way of thinking. She's coming to realize that she has a huge crush on Gemma, and she doesn't know what to do about the fact that she's now playing Gemma's love interest onstage. Can she play it cool? Is there any possibility Gemma could like her back as more than a friend? (more...)

BWW REVIEW: American Ballet Theatre's LE CORSAIRE
by Wesley Doucette - Jun 19, 2017

Petipa, who of the three choreographers listed in the program has the most influence on American Ballet Theatre's Le Corsaire, knows how to create a dramatic excuse for dance. With a few notable exceptions, 'Giselle' and 'Romeo and Juliet' come instantly to my mind, declarative dance which spends twenty minutes to hammer out an 'I love you' through pirouettes can be draining and leave the audience thinking 'Just spit it out.' Petipa, clearly seeing this dramatic shortcoming, forms his ballets around vast pageants, processionals, and presentations. The Black Swan seduces by exhibition at a banquet, the last glorious act of The Sleeping Beauty is a virtually plotless celebration, and practically the entire Nutcracker is a series of vignettes formed around a presentation. Le Corsaire is no different. The first act features the presentation of several ballerinas. The second act is centered around the principal dancers performing to 'entertain the group'. Then, in act three, a pasha spends a lengthy amount of time in a dream sequence which features, what else, women and flowers. Superficially, this all works wonderfully and the dancers shamelessly take this opportunity to exploit their most acrobatic technique. The piece's issues begin upon the introduction of the words 'slave girls.' (more...)

BWW Exclusive: A Visit to New York Public Library for the Performing Arts' CURTAIN UP Exhibit
by Leah Lane - Jun 16, 2017

"Curtain Up: Celebrating Forty Years of Theatre in New York and London" opened at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center October 31st. The idea for the exhibit was conceived when the Society of London Theatre wanted to create a display in conjunction with London's Victoria and Albert Museum to honor forty years of the Olivier Awards. Doug Reside, who is the curator for the Theatre Division at the library, explained that eventually "those conversations [between SOLT and V&A] started to morph about including us and including the Tony's." From there Reside worked with Anna Landreth Strong, V&A Curator of Modern and Contemporary Theatre and Performance, to create an exhibit that worked on both sides of the Atlantic. To qualify for the exhibit a show must have been nominated for both a Tony Award and an Olivier Award, won one of those nominations, and had a production within the last 40 years.  (more...)
