by BWW News Desk - Sep 25, 2014

Over the last year, Reverend Billy & The Stop Shopping Choir have applied their signature musical activism to counteracting big corporations' role in climate disruption. By turns attracting acclaim and threats of jail time, Reverend Billy and the singers, led by director Savitri D. and musical director Nehemiah Luckett, have performed in investment banks, pollinator drone labs, Walmart back aisles and waist deep in the surf off Coney Island to dramatize the sea level rise from climate change. They conclude this banner year with Monsanto Is the Devil, which they will perform with the five-piece Not Buying It Band at Joe's Pub at The Public (425 Lafayette St, NYC) on five consecutive Sundays this holiday season. Bookworks Presents Today's Shelf Awareness for ReadersBookworks Presents Today's Shelf Awareness for Readers
by BWW News Desk - Sep 23, 2014

It's the season: football is dominating the news. The ongoing concussion discussion has been eclipsed by suspensions and non-suspensions for domestic abuse, while Josh Gordon is suspended an entire year for smoking weed. Nate Jackson, former pro player and author of Slow Getting Up: A Story of N.F.L. Survival from the Bottom of the Pile (Harper Perennial), has a good take on the latter. In addition to Jackson's hilarious, candid memoir, we'd like to suggest a few books that fans will want to read (if only during halftime). (more...)

Spoiler Alert! Did HOMELAND Return to Form After Brody-Induced Disaster?Spoiler Alert! Did HOMELAND Return to Form After Brody-Induced Disaster?
by Matt Tamanini - Oct 5, 2014

The brilliance of the first season of HOMELAND lay in the fact that complicated people were making complicated decisions. We weren't presented with a black-and-white world where the good guys always wore red, white, and blue. Instead, we saw people wrestling with the same geo-political issues that our nation was dealing with at the time. It was confusing, it was dirty, it was dangerous, but it was captivating and unique. Since that first season, the show has devolved into one that no longer wrestles with big issues, it instead has been driven by the same thing that drives 95% of every other show on television; love. by Don Grigware - Oct 14, 2014

Since its creation in 1997, Ragtime has remained one of my favorite musicals for two reasons. Its simply gorgeous almost opera-like musical score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens moves me to the bone, and it has more meaningful historical content about America at the turn of the 20th century than just about any other show. Now by means of 3D Theatricals' new, freshly staged production, onstage in Fullerton through October 26, Ragtime continues its deeply moving effect on audiences. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Nov 20, 2014

Syngenta GMO Lawsuit News: The Oliver Law Group P.C. reports that more lawsuits are being filed against Syngenta over its genetically modified (GMO) corn seed that agribusinesses and exporters allege have caused them to lose money due to China's refusal to buy the product. According to a report from the Associated Press, more than 50 Syngenta GMO lawsuits have been filed against Syngenta and “hundreds more” are expect to be filed. The Syngenta GMO lawsuits allege that China's refusal to import the GMO product because it contains Agrisure Viptera has cost farmers more than $1 billion. The Associated Press further reported that China, a major importer of American corn, has not agreed to purchase a GMO product that it has not tested. According to the report, Syngenta contends that the lawsuits do not have merit and “upholds the right of farmers to use approved new technologies.” (foxbusiness.com/markets/2014/11/17/dozens-lawsuits-filed-over-syngenta-release-gmo-corn-seed-that-china-refuses-to/, November 17, 2014) (more...)

Bookworks Presents Its November Edition of IT'S ABOUT BOOKSBookworks Presents Its November Edition of IT'S ABOUT BOOKS
by BWW News Desk - Nov 18, 2014

It is all about how an author carefully and purposely beckons each word to each page until those words pull together into a magnificent creation having a life of its own. The book I am reviewing,All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, is one such masterful creation. Don't wait for the paperback, don't wait for the movie, buy the book, now. Buy it as a gift, buy it for yourself, insist that your book club adds it to the list of must reads. Read it when you have the time to savor each and every word that has been so carefully placed. This book puts to shame many of the other books I have read this year. The characters, the story line, the settings, the time periods, the premise and purpose that stand behind the book are knitted together flawlessly, satisfying the reader completely. Every sentence is fraught with beautiful imagery. (more...)
