BWW Reviews: BEN RIMALOWER Is Back at The Duplex Dramatically and Humorously Dealing With the Personal Demons of His PastBWW Reviews: BEN RIMALOWER Is Back at The Duplex Dramatically and Humorously Dealing With the Personal Demons of His Past
by John Hoglund - Mar 4, 2015

Ben Rimalower just might be heading a revival of downtown theater. Following the wild success of his popular cabaret-theater piece, Patti Issues, which ran forever (and is still going strong), he's back with his latest entry into obsessive-compulsive issues, Bad With Money, running at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre through April. This is a profoundly darker work, laced with campy humor and his trademark spitfire delivery. It is more serious and thought provoking as he expounds on his neurotic spending habits and substance addictions. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Hub Theatre Company Puts Its Money on LOOT to Start Season ThreeBWW Reviews: Hub Theatre Company Puts Its Money on LOOT to Start Season Three
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 30, 2015

Hub Theatre Company of Boston starts its third season with LOOT, an irreverent, dark comedy by British playwright Joe Orton (WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE) at the First Church in Boston. Daniel Bourque directs a cast of six live actors and one dormant dummy that is handled with Reckless abandon. Part detective story, part farce, LOOT is reminiscent of plays staged by high school drama clubs in the 1960s, giving everyone a chance to chew lots of scenery. (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling TheatreBWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented Cast Makes Difficult NINE Compelling Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 26, 2015

A musical with Italian opera-inspired songs about a philandering middle-aged film director with writer's block, and the dozens of women that influence his life and work, does not seem like an obvious choice for a college theatre program to undertake. However, under the direction of Earl D. Weaver (who also choreographed), Theatre UCF sinks its collective teeth into the neurotic, misogynistic, and childish mind of Guido Contini in NINE, running through March 29th. This seven-time Tony-winning musical is based on the semi-autobiographical film '8' by Italian director Federico Fellini. The cast of 21 women, one man, and four boys creates an evocative world that seems to hover in the realm between fantasy and reality; much like many of Fellini's films. With striking talent, breath-taking design, and artistic vision, Theatre UCF succeeds where many professional companies would (and have) faltered; despite its unsettling premise, NINE is a joyful reminder of the power of young talent in the arts. by Alix Cohen - Mar 23, 2015

Just when one thinks Carole J. Bufford has thoroughly plumbed the genre for which she has so much affinity, the artist comes up with an audacious new show whose distinct focus, original format, and unblushing presentation delivers a fresh take. Heart of Gold: A Portrait of the Oldest Profession (this past Saturday night at 54 Below) offers a cavalcade of women who get paid to provide 'pleasure'--madams, streetwalkers, dancehall girls, and kept women from salty to sensuous, weary and bitter to a view from the catbird seat, enmeshed or looking back. BWW Reviews: BARE A POP OPERA at Clandestine ArtsBWW Reviews: BARE A POP OPERA at Clandestine Arts
by Itai Yasur - Feb 22, 2015

While some might complement Clandestine-Arts' production of BARE: A POP OPERA for its 'can-do' attitude, there's a difference between the type of youthful inexperience that leads to theater that is exciting and new, and the type of Reckless abandon that is at best moderately amusing and at worst incredibly dangerous. That is to say, there's nothing wrong with upstart theater company Clandestine-Arts' creative vision of producing emotion-driven musicals with low budgets, but theater is an incredibly technical art form. Whether the venue is a Broadway 2,000 seater, a high school auditorium, or a hole in the hall black box in Adams Morgan, there is never an excuse for a production so shoddily put together that the audience can reasonably fear for the performers safety, as well as their own; especially not at the admission price Clandestine is charging. At the end of the day, what really seems to be lacking is a sense of adult supervision. (more...)
