LEARN TO BE LATINA Plays Milagro Theatre, Now thru 5/31
by BWW News Desk - May 1, 2014

What would you do if you were told that you need to stop being how you are, looking how you look, and loving how you love? That your style of clothes, and the way you walk and talk are not good. Would you agree? You'll also be told what to do, how to dress and even how to love! Would you do that? It sounds unthinkable in our modern western society, where we have been told so often that being yourself is a good thing, right? Think again. Isn't that what we hear every time we turn the TV on or flip the pages of any magazine? 'You have to look like this!' 'You must do that!' We may not notice anything odd about this until we come across the smart, critical and satirical portrait of this reality framed in 'Learn to be Latina' by Enrique Urueta, playing at Milagro Theatre from today, May 1-31, 2014. BWW CD Reviews: A Second Take on GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE
by David Clarke - Jun 22, 2014

Back in April, I had the pleasure of reviewing A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER (Original Broadway Cast Recording). My initial thoughts were that the recording was witty and intriguing, but without the context of the show I couldn't really connect with it. Conversely, I got to see a recent performance of the Tony Award winning comedic musical. Upon revisiting the album, I can't shake most of the deliciously clever songs. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Circuit Invites the Audience into THE LYONS Den
by Joseph Baker - Jun 2, 2014

There's a moment in the first act of Nicky Silver's THE LYONS when dying patriarch 'Ben' is asked whether he is in pain; his response, a monosyllabic 'Yes,' hardly ranks with any of the brilliantly barbed lines scattered throughout the play, but as intoned by veteran actor Ron Gephart, it acquires a startling variety of shades. As uttered by this gifted performer, a number of insights can be gained into the unfortunate Ben's character: Frustration, resignation, intolerance. If Mr. Gephart can manage that by simply saying 'Yes,' imagine what he is able to do with the dialogues and monologs that follow. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Grand Rapids Civic Theatre's 9 TO 5 Will Leave You Smiling
by Cassandra Sandros - Jun 2, 2014

9 to 5 is the musical comedy based upon the 1980 film of the same name, with music and lyrics penned by Dolly Parton. It is Dolly herself who opens the show via video, taking the audience back to 1979 and all its glass-ceilinged, technologically-impaired glory, setting the scene for the opening number, the rollicking title song, "9 to 5". BWW Reviews: DeSoto Family Theatre Storms the Barricades With LES MIS
by Joseph Baker - Jul 7, 2014

There were several reasons that I almost denied myself the pleasure of attending DeSoto Family Theatre's new production of Boublil and Schonberg's LES MISERABLES, the epic (and enduring) musical version of Victor Hugo's massive nineteenth century novel. I hereby state my preconceived notions - and hope to explain why I was so ill-opined. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jul 21, 2014

Surrealist Burlesque returns to the Coney Island USA Sideshow by the Seashore stage with its 6th incarnation of what has been hailed by the press as "Striptease meets Socrates" (Brooklyn Paper). This years' Surrealist Burlesque presents Flaming Creatures, a tribute to Jack Smith's ground-breaking work that pioneered experimental film-making and representations of gender fluidity in the early 1960s. Flaming Creatures at Coney Island USA features stars of the art world and burlesque stage who have created acts in the spirit of Smith's queer, Utopic landscape. BWW Reviews: THE TSAR'S BRIDE a Heavenly Marriage with the Bolshoi Opera at Lincoln Center Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Jul 18, 2014

It's easy for opera-lovers to complain about the homogenization of casting at the world's great houses—particularly when there's only a small handful of Annas, Jonases, Juan Diegos, Cecilias, etc., that everybody wants to hear. So it was a treat to hear the visiting Bolshoi's concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's THE TSAR'S BRIDE last weekend at Lincoln Center Festival—filled with wonderful solo voices almost completely unknown to New York audiences, along with the stalwart Bolshoi chorus (under Valery Borisov).
