This whole “Mid-season finale” fad is a new tactic over the past few years to justify going off the air for a few months during the holidays, right? I don't remember this being a thing in the past. by Jeffrey Walker - Nov 24, 2014

As of tonight, GOTHAM has clocked in ten episodes. Organized crime wars, underworld underlings with delusions of grandeur, sadistic henchmen, shady real estate deals, unsolved murders – these are just a handful of the daily machinations we have seen so far in the naked city. Maverick detective James Gordon is still trying his best to stay above the dark underbelly of corruption that percolates through nearly every brick in Gotham. So how do things end up during tonight's episode, “Lovecraft,” the fall finale? Gird your loins, here we go! (more...)

by Richard Sasanow - Nov 18, 2014

Compared to Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as Katerina Ismailova in LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK at the Met, Barbara Stanwyck and Lana Turner were couple of pikers in their film noir triumphs, “Double Indemnity” and “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” Westbroek kills her father-in-law with rat Poison, strangles her husband with her lover's belt and, as the piece de resistence, drowns her lover's new girlfriend, while going under herself. And she has to do it all while effortlessly singing Shostakovich's demanding score. What a dame! (more...)

BWW Recap: GOTHAM is Dented and Bombed While the Cat Sleeps Over at Wayne ManorBWW Recap: GOTHAM is Dented and Bombed While the Cat Sleeps Over at Wayne Manor
by Jeffrey Walker - Nov 17, 2014

GOTHAM added a new major player into the mix this week: Harvey Dent. For the unwashed masses, future district attorney Harvey Dent meets with a “scarry” accident and takes on the mantel of Two-Face who always gives crime a 50-50 chance when he flips a partially mutilated coin. As he is introduced to viewers and detective James Gordon, however, he is a singularly handsome, coin-flipping, do-gooder and he joins forces with Gordon to investigate the Wayne murder case. Oswald's beak finds Mooney's secret weapon against Carmine Falcone, Liza. Young Bruce Wayne also begins his heavy duty training with his British Special Forces veteran butler, Alfred Pennyworth. And, surprisingly, Bruce and Alfred take on a new house guest. Here's the rundown on another jam-packed episode in the naked city of Gotham. Spoilers are likely, so tread lightly, Bat-fans. BLONDE Poison is based on the true story of Stella Goldschlag (1922-1994), a young woman who had exquisite beauty with the blue eyes, blonde hair and bone structure that marked her as a young Aryan goddess. But she was not an Aryan - she was a Jew who survived the Holocaust by becoming a Greifer, an informant for the Gestapo. She had been nicknamed "Blonde Poison" by the Gestapo for her efficiency in catching Jews to be subsequently slaughtered. (more...)

by Heidi Scheuermann - Feb 3, 2015

Alright, so unlike most humans who are currently in their mid-twenties, I grew up listening to the tunes of artists like Bing Crosby (not just at Christmastime), Judy Garland, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters… I could go on forever. I listened to it because my dad listened to it because his dad listened to it. It's in my blood, I can't help it. Besides, have you ever given 40s music a really good listen? If you have, you'll know that there never were smoother voices in this history of forever. Silky smooth, buttery voices. People just don't sing like that anymore! Not to mention full orchestras backed the singers. Full orchestras! We're talking piano, drums, trumpets, trombones, bass (the upright kind), saxophone… I mean these guys really knew how to rock!
