by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2016

Alessandra Belloni and her performance troupe, I Giullari di Piazza, will return June 29 to Cathedral of St. John the Divine with 'Feast of the Tarantati' (Feast of Apulia), an ancient healing tradition with Tarantella trance dances and healing chants for the Black Madonna.  In Italy, the ritual is traditionally celebrated in a church in Apulia. This will be the first time that Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari Di Piazza will reenact the ceremony inside a church in New York.  At the conclusion of the performance, the audience will be invited to join in 'releasing the Poison and venom from our bodies and souls.' I Giullari di Piazza is a resident company of Cathedral of St. John the Divine. (more...)

BWW Review: HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL a Big Hit With the Film's Fans
by Paul Batterson - May 14, 2016

If it were a high school student, HEATHERS would've been voted 'Least Likely To Become A MUSICAL.' Released in 1988, the dark comedy about an outsider's plot of murderous revenge against the popular kids' clique almost seems like a backlash to the sunnier view of high school life like THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985), PRETTY IN PINK (1986) and FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (1986). BWW Review: Winter Opera's IL TROVATORE Goes In High Melodrama
by Steve Callahan - Mar 4, 2016

High passion and sheer unrestrained melodrama overflow in Verdi's 'Il Trovatore,' the current offering by Winter Opera St. Louis. And the voices are glorious! Once again Winter Opera has assembled a sterling group of singers. Caruso once said that all it takes for a successful performance of 'Trovatore' is the four greatest singers in the world. I'm not sure if the judges' ballots are all in yet, but the singers of the four principal roles in this production would seem to be right up there among the finalists. (more...)

BWW Review: Shakespeare Theatre Company Presents an OTHELLO for Our Times
by Jeffrey Walker - Mar 4, 2016

Shakespeare Theatre Company proves once again their place as one of the nation's finest classical theatre companies with a new production of OTHELLO. A careful blend of grand spectacle and intimate relationships, William Shakespeare's mature tragedy leaps off of the stage with passion, wit, and pathos. Starring Pakistani-American Faran Tahir in the title role, this OTHELLO is filtered through the lens of Othello as a Muslim who has adopted Western dress and religion. The concept works and the tragedy still works as one of Shakespeare's best. (more...)

Critic's Choice: If Life's A Cabaret, Why Aren't You At The Theater?
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 10, 2016

Winter's apparently over - it's in the mid-70s, balmy and windy, as we write this - and even before Spring pops up all over, there's an amazing amount of good theater to be found in the Nashville area. In fact, there's so much to choose from that you have absolutely no excuse staying alone in your room. Instead, in the wise and wonderful words of Sally Bowles, life is a cabaret and you're far more likely to find that out in the darkened confines of a theater, where magic and mayhem is bound to happen. BWW Review: Liz Callaway Holds a Love Fest for Richard Maltby & David Shire at Lincoln Center's American Songbook
by Alix Cohen - Apr 1, 2016

There are audible sighs of pleasurable recognition from the audience at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center (on March 30) when Liz Callaway's band plays opening bars from "The Story Goes On" (Baby)." Songwriting partners Richard Maltby & David Shire have been "in" Liz Callaway's life since she was a teenager with exposure to her parents' extensive Barbra Streisand collection (the icon sang Maltby/Shire) and a recording of Starting Here, Starting Now. Her first New York cabaret presentation (at The Duplex) opened with "Just Across the River" from the revue. That show lead to an audition for a piece directed by Richard Maltby Jr. which eventually paved the way for Callaway's role in the collaborators' musical Baby. The young actress thought she was helping out writers she admired by letting them hear new material out loud, but, in fact, was auditioning. (This is actually not difficult to believe.) And the rest is history. (more...)
