BWW Recap: REIGN Returns with a Season of Plague and DeathBWW Recap: REIGN Returns with a Season of Plague and Death
by Nicole Ackman - Oct 3, 2014

In its Season 2 premiere, REIGN takes a definite turn for the gory with the horrifying evidence of the plague seen ten seconds into the episode. In the first sixteen minutes, the plague has already claimed fourteen victims in the castle – and it claims two of our named characters by the end of the episode. The writers of the show have promised that there will be major deaths nearly every episode this season and after this episode, I believe it. (more...)

BWW Recap: 'The Abyss Gazes Back' on SLEEPY HOLLOWBWW Recap: 'The Abyss Gazes Back' on SLEEPY HOLLOW
by Courtney Henley - Oct 28, 2014

It's tense. It's hot. We see an extreme close-up of Ichabod, and he's in distress. He's being…tortured? Maybe. It's okay, though, Abbie's there to calm him down. But an equally close shot of her shows us that she's not exactly relaxing herself. She's calm, but focused. The camera moves back, and we see Abbie and Ichabod upside down…doing yoga. That's a relief. Let's be honest: is there anything more endearing than watching Ichabod trying to understand modernity? He's stressed and disappointed about Katrina lying to him, and Abbie's trying to get him to relax. Ichabod prefers the bar, though, and it's there that he dynamic duo stumble upon Sheriff Corbin's son, Joe. So begins this week's SLEEPY HOLLOW battle to save humanity. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Ten Thousand Things' Minimalist Production of ROMEO AND JULIET Brings the Classic Story to Life in a Unique WayBWW Reviews: Ten Thousand Things' Minimalist Production of ROMEO AND JULIET Brings the Classic Story to Life in a Unique Way
by Jill Schafer - Oct 19, 2014

No one does Shakespeare like Ten Thousand Things. They manage to boil the text down to its bare essentials, and convey the heart of the story in a way that feels fresh and modern. This season they bring their unique Shakespeare style to perhaps his most well-know play, the story of star-crossed lovers that inspired all others, Romeo and Juliet. In the typically minimalist production (since TTT performs on location at prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers, the paid public performances are also in a small, fully lit room with little in the way of sets and costumes), director Peter Rothstein and his fantastic cast of eight playing multiple characters bring this familiar story to life in a unique way. Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: Matt Bomer Falls Victim to an American Psycho in a Crowded FREAKSHOWSpoiler Alert! Recap and Review: Matt Bomer Falls Victim to an American Psycho in a Crowded FREAKSHOW
by Matt Tamanini - Nov 6, 2014

When I was a child, I loved drawing pictures; despite the fact that it was very clear that I had little to no artistic ability in this arena, I continued to draw anyway. Whether it was a sunrise over a mountain with little “V” shaped birds flying towards the horizon, or a sunset over a beach with little “V” shaped birds flying towards the horizon, I kept drawing. However, every time I would get to the point when the picture had just enough detail, I would think of something else that it must have before it could be considered complete. So, I would add more pine trees on the mountains, or umbrellas on the beach, until my canvas piece of paper was so overcrowded with stuff, that it was hard to see the forest through the trees, often literally. This has been my major complaint about the genre-defining (and defying) anthology series AMERICAN HORROR STORY from the beginning. (more...)

by Richard Sasanow - Nov 18, 2014

Compared to Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as Katerina Ismailova in LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK at the Met, Barbara Stanwyck and Lana Turner were couple of pikers in their film noir triumphs, “Double Indemnity” and “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” Westbroek kills her father-in-law with rat Poison, strangles her husband with her lover's belt and, as the piece de resistence, drowns her lover's new girlfriend, while going under herself. And she has to do it all while effortlessly singing Shostakovich's demanding score. What a dame! (more...)

by Jeffrey Walker - Nov 17, 2014

GOTHAM added a new major player into the mix this week: Harvey Dent. For the unwashed masses, future district attorney Harvey Dent meets with a “scarry” accident and takes on the mantel of Two-Face who always gives crime a 50-50 chance when he flips a partially mutilated coin. As he is introduced to viewers and detective James Gordon, however, he is a singularly handsome, coin-flipping, do-gooder and he joins forces with Gordon to investigate the Wayne murder case. Oswald's beak finds Mooney's secret weapon against Carmine Falcone, Liza. Young Bruce Wayne also begins his heavy duty training with his British Special Forces veteran butler, Alfred Pennyworth. And, surprisingly, Bruce and Alfred take on a new house guest. Here's the rundown on another jam-packed episode in the naked city of Gotham. Spoilers are likely, so tread lightly, Bat-fans. by Stephen Hanks - Nov 1, 2014

Any visit by celebrated chanteuse Barb Jungr to a New York cabaret stage or theatre is a cause for jubilation. Slightly less than a year since she rocked 59E59 with her week long run of Dancing In the Dark, Jungr was back on that stage with a new show based on her recently released, highly-acclaimed CD, Hard Rain: The Songs of Bob Dylan & Leonard Cohen. But where Dancing In the Dark was Jungr's introspective take on some classic pop songs (including some Dylan and Cohen), her Hard Rain set is truly dark and Jungr doesn't apologize for that. In fact, often during this collection of songs written by two of pop music's foremost dark poets of the soul (with stirring arrangements by Jungr and her CD Producer Simon Wallace), Jungr readily admits the set is depressing because her intent was to focus on Dylan and Cohen songs that were at once powerful, personal, political, philosophical, and often prophetic.
