BWW Reviews: DeSoto Family Theatre Storms the Barricades With LES MIS
by Joseph Baker - Jul 7, 2014

There were several reasons that I almost denied myself the pleasure of attending DeSoto Family Theatre's new production of Boublil and Schonberg's LES MISERABLES, the epic (and enduring) musical version of Victor Hugo's massive nineteenth century novel. I hereby state my preconceived notions - and hope to explain why I was so ill-opined. (more...)

Surrealist Burlesque returns to the Coney Island USA Sideshow by the Seashore stage with its 6th incarnation of what has been hailed by the press as "Striptease meets Socrates" (Brooklyn Paper). This years' Surrealist Burlesque presents Flaming Creatures, a tribute to Jack Smith's ground-breaking work that pioneered experimental film-making and representations of gender fluidity in the early 1960s. BWW Reviews: THE TSAR'S BRIDE a Heavenly Marriage with the Bolshoi Opera at Lincoln Center Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Jul 18, 2014

It's easy for opera-lovers to complain about the homogenization of casting at the world's great houses—particularly when there's only a small handful of Annas, Jonases, Juan Diegos, Cecilias, etc., that everybody wants to hear. So it was a treat to hear the visiting Bolshoi's concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's THE TSAR'S BRIDE last weekend at Lincoln Center Festival—filled with wonderful solo voices almost completely unknown to New York audiences, along with the stalwart Bolshoi chorus (under Valery Borisov). EDINBURGH 2014 - BWW Reviews: WHITE RABBIT RED RABBIT, Assembly George Square Studios, August 2 2014
by Kevin Sherwin - Aug 5, 2014

I'll admit it: I'm a fan of a theatrical gimmick. Generally speaking, a production that has a bit of a high-concept twist that can be summed up in ten words or less is in with a good shot at a positive review from me. And so, White Rabbit Red Rabbit, with its pitch of 'actor opens envelope and performs play without ever reading it' was already off to a good start. (more...)

BWW Reviews: SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE Is Smokin' at Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre
by Don Grigware - Aug 4, 2014

Akin to a revue, Smokey Joe's Cafe is made up of songs, songs, and more songs without a single word of dialogue. Like the final tune says 'That Is Rock & Roll'; it's the music of Leiber and Stoller who gave us some of the biggest hits of the 50s like 'Hound Dog', 'Love Potion # 9' and 'Jailhouse Rock'. In a lively revival at Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre, the smoke, the cafe and its music are ecstatically displayed by a cast of 9 thrilling vocalists. (more...)

BWW Reviews: For a Good Time Call The Skivvies

Unless you've been living under a rock, chances are you have heard of the New York based cabaret act The Skivvies. Made up of Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, this energetic duo has a loyal fan following and a reputation for being absurdly fun. I got to check out one of their concerts, and I'm afraid that my words will never actually fully communicate the sheer amount of fun and joy I experienced at their show. (more...)

BWW Review: 'A TENDER THING' Fizzles and Frustrates
by Catherine Kustanczy - Aug 20, 2014

Ben Power's 2009 play A Tender Thing is a creative re-imagining of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the two title characters as older figures in a lifelong relationship. Soulpepper Theatre Company's current production (on at the Young Centre through October 1st) features real-life couple Joseph Ziegler and Nancy Palk as the two star-crossed lovers. Though their performances are filled with warmth and knowing, they can't escape an essentially dreary production that pulls away the beauty of Shakespeare's language, even as it revels in some over-theatricalized decisions that mute the genuine emotion sitting at the heart of a less-than-perfect work. 'Poison Heads' on Manchester Police Force Corruption in the 1970s is Released
by BWW News Desk - Aug 13, 2014

English has now published this account of his tense first years in the Force. At the time of the IRA bombings he was a young Police Constable who was actually there and on the scene. His book reveals his easy-going approach to life, and his dismay at discovering the extent of force corruption and favouritism. He tells of cover-ups, brutality, self-serving and just plain stupidity. Casually and with humour, English begins with his early family life on the farm with his inspiring globe-trotting Gran, then shares anecdotes of his journey to Police Training and life in the Force. 'Now my 25-year pact with the Official Secrets Act is over, I can spill the beans about these 'Poison Heads' - the bent professionals of law and order I worked with every day,' states English. At a time when Britain was in turmoil, in the Thatcher Era of demonstrations and unrest, the city of Manchester was the site of violent demonstrations and bombings as well as crime. The Force worked side by side with the tough teams in SAS, TAG, MI5 and many others to maintain the peace. However, the Force itself was hampered by its legacy of corruption and internal politics. Is the situation much different today? News reports still detail police corruption and inquiries in many major cities, including Greater Manchester. Jonny English was recently interviewed on Talk Radio Europe by Bill Padley. Padley is an acclaimed and award-winning writer, producer and broadcaster who has interviewed a veritable 'who's who' of the UK's music industry. Talking with Jonny about the show 'Life on Mars', which featured the Greater Manchester Police Force at that time, Padley asked, 'Is that a fairly accurate summation of what it was like?' Jonny replied, 'Pretty much so.' But he emphasized that his book details true events, saying, 'So comparative-wise I've got the true story, and it's very open and very revealing.' By sharing tales of his early life before joining, English helps the reader to see through his eyes, making the view of the Force with its corruption and lies more vivid. 'In the Force my eyes were opened and I was to view many things in life quite differently - especially how people really are, the reality of death, the bliss of love and, most of all, what it takes to survive on the streets of a city,' said English, in his first in a series of three books. Approachable, humourous and direct, Jonny English is available for interviews and readings. 'Poison Heads' is the first of three fast-paced books outlining the author's true 'James Bond style' life and times. Bio: Jonny English was born in Rossendale, England, and grew up in the 1950's near Manchester, England in the heart of the Pennine Hills. He spent his early years on his Grandmother's farm, The Willows. He was educated at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School where he studied Art, Architecture, English Literature and European History. After joining the Greater Manchester Police Force as a Police Constable during the 1970's, he began to doubt the credibility of the Force and changed his career path. Today he works as a Senior Chief Estimator for a Corporation in Western Canada. During his life he has worked and travelled extensively throughout Europe, South America, Central America and Africa, where he personally delivered gifts for the Red Cross School Children and the poor in third world countries. More info and photos, including book one-sheet flyer: Book Website: www.Poisonheads.com Backgrounder (http://Poisonheads.com/corruption-in-the-force/) Poison Heads is in paperback on Amazon, and in ebook formats on iBooks and Kindle. Review copies on request. Contact: jonnyenglish@Poisonheads.com, 780-707-5022 (more...)
