The Santa Barbara International Film Festival to Honor Outstanding Contributions in Directing

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced today that Barry Jenkins, Damien Chazelle, Denis Villeneuve, and Kenneth Lonergan will receive the 2017 Outstanding Directors of the Year Award. They will each be celebrated individually for their films Moonlight, La La Land, Arrival, and Manchester by the Sea respectively.  The individual honors will be followed by a joint conversation between the directors on their craft and the landscape of modern day filmmaking.  The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 7th at the historic Arlington Theatre. They join the previously announced musical theatre stars Sharon D. BWW Review: CRIMES OF THE HEART Enjoyably Revisits Beth Henley's 1981 Classic

CRIMES OF THE HEART, produced by City Theatre, is the Pulitzer prize-winning comedy by Beth Henley. Originally premiering in 1979, the show ran on Broadway in 1981 and garnered a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play. In 1986, a film adaptation starring Jessica Lange, Diane Keaton, and Sissy Spacek was released. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay. In recent history, the play was revived and presented at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2007, directed by Kathleen Turner. The revival also enjoyed a brief off-Broadway run in 2008 with Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Jennifer Dundas in the starring roles. (more...)

Unpublished Mark Twain Children's Book to be Completed and Released by Random House, 9/26

Doubleday Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children's Books, has acquired a never-before-published Mark Twain children's story, it was announced today by Mallory Loehr, Senior Vice President & Publisher of the Random House/Golden Books, Doubleday, and Crown Books for Young Readers Group. The story, a fairy tale left unfinished by Twain, will be brought to life by author Philip Stead and illustrator Erin Stead, the creators of the Caldecott Medal–winning A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The book, THE PURLOINING OF PRINCE OLEOMARGARINE, was acquired and edited by Frances Gilbert, Associate Publishing Director, Random House Books for Young Readers, from Tina Wexler at ICM, representing the Mark Twain House & Museum, and Emily van Beek at Folio Jr., representing the author/illustrator team. Black Coffee Productions (BCP) is proud to announce the casting of their first Fresh Grind Festival which will showcase ten staged readings of new works. A diverse group of forty-three actors has been cast including two time Grammy Nominee Martha Wash, who is well known for the multi platinum single, 'It's Raining Men.' Wash will lead the cast in the zombie parody, I Want to Eat Brains (or the Day I Killed All My Friends). The eclectic mix of actor's credits range from regional, off-off Broadway to Broadway, and National television credits. Other notable casting includes Jeremy Villas in The Bishops. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) announced its 2017/18 season to a packed house in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre earlier this evening. The Orchestra's third annual, free Season Preview Concert once again featured the entire orchestra onstage performing selected excerpts, with emcee Music Director Ward Stare joined for the first time by Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik. The two co-hosted the informal and lively evening from a living room-type setting on stage, and took turns conducting highlights from the upcoming Philharmonics and Pops Series. (more...)

Titicut Follies: The Ballet, a world premiere ballet choregraphed by James Sewell and inspired byFrederick Wiseman's startling 1967 documentary, will run for three performances, April 28 - 30, 2017 at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.  Titicut Follies: The Ballet will be performed by the James Sewell Ballet, with an original score by Lenny Pickett. A collaboration between Wiseman, Sewell and Pickett, the work is presented in conjunction with The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. Hillbarn Theatre presents Neil Simon's Classical Farce RUMORS

Hillbarn Theatre, the Peninsula's premier theatre company, continues its "Season of Belonging" with Neil Simon's classic farce, Rumors.  This Broadway hit tells the story of Charley and Myra Brock who are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary and have invited all their good friends. Chris and Ken Gorman, a legal couple, are the first ones to arrive. They show up only to find that Myra is missing and Charley has "accidentally" shot himself in the ear. Charley is the deputy Mayor of New York City and, hoping to avoid a scandal, Ken and Chris go about covering up before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. (more...)
