But the process of bringing it to the stage, which Rice and original West End star Elaine Page detail in a new series of essays with The Guardian, was challenging, invigorating, and began on a 'late night in 1973.' Charlie Pollock and Mary Kate Morrissey to Star in Signature Theatre's ELMER GANTRY This Fall

Signature Theatre has announced the cast of Elmer Gantry, a musical version of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel, directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway's Follies, Million Dollar Quartet). Schaeffer collaborated on the last production of Elmer Gantry at Marriott's Lincolnshire Theatre in Chicago with authors John Bishop (book), Mel Marvin (music) and Bob Satuloff (lyrics) in 1998; the show has not been produced since then. This will be the 5th production in the show's history. Running in the MAX Theatre October 7 - November 9, Signature's production will include several brand new songs by Mel Marvin and Bob Satuloff and a reimagined script that John Bishop worked on until his death in 2006. The history of 'the butler did it' as a mystery plot device is filled with old-fashioned classism. To proponents of the trope, it was a great twist; who would suspect the servant, a person who ideally is supposed to be invisible? Others, such as S.S. Van Dine, considered it too easy a solution-because of course the lower tiers of the social order would be the logical place for such a culprit. In any case, the notion was already a hoary old cliche by the 1930s, when Todd Wallinger's The Butler Did It! is set-so much so that it's practically the first thing brought up between butler Jenkins and maid Sarah when discussing the popular mystery writer about to descend upon their household. KIDS WEEK Acheives Record-Breaking First Day Sales of 85,336 Tickets

The annual London theatre initiative Kids Week (www.kidsweek.co.uk) has achieved a 77% year-on-year increase in first-day sales, with 85,336 tickets sold in the first 24 hours since going on sale on 17 June 2014 at 10:00am (compared to the equivalent period in 2013). With its darkly comic and thrilling storyline, The Perfect Murder was a success on the first leg of its tour earlier this year.
