City Parks Foundation Presents SummerStage, 7/21-30
by BWW News Desk - Jun 30, 2014

Hip hop, Indie-rock, punk and folk artists committed to social change will come together to honor musician and activist Pete Seeger. The program's hosts are Gina Belafonte, Harry Belafonte's daughter and Kitama Jackson, Pete Seeger's grandson. Mr. Seeger and Mr. Belafonte became international household names as singers who stood for change. For Belafonte that meant being involved in both the Civil Rights Movement in US and the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. For Seeger that meant getting people singing, and then using song to lead marches and rallies around the world. From the labor movement to the Civil Rights movement to the environmental movement, Pete Seeger was always on the front lines. Today's artists aren't that different from Seeger and Belafonte, they also use music as a means to give voice to the voiceless and inspire people to change the world for themselves, their communities and future generations. Dr. Lucky's Surrealist Burlesque at Coney Island USA Set for 8/8
by BWW News Desk - Jul 21, 2014

Surrealist Burlesque returns to the Coney Island USA Sideshow by the Seashore stage with its 6th incarnation of what has been hailed by the press as "Striptease meets Socrates" (Brooklyn Paper). This years' Surrealist Burlesque presents Flaming Creatures, a tribute to Jack Smith's ground-breaking work that pioneered experimental film-making and representations of gender fluidity in the early 1960s. Considered by many to be a founding father of performance art and an innovator of underground film, Jack Smith's film was officially deemed "obscene" by a New York Criminal Court. Flaming Creatures at Coney Island USA features stars of the art world and burlesque stage who have created acts in the spirit of Smith's queer, Utopic landscape. Starring Carmelita Tropicana, Dirty Martini, Dr. Lucky, Jennifer Miller, Jason Mejias, Julie Atlas Muz, and Poison Eve. With production numbers featuring the Dali Dancers. Video installation by Joe E. Jeffreys and Ves Pitts. Living Surrealist Object Sculptures by Jenny Pierce, featuring Tiny D, Zoe Ziegfeld, Lillian Bustle, Mia Julep, and Clara Coquette. BWW Recap: SYTYCD Takes Trip to Broadway with ON THE TOWN, HEDWIG's Spencer Liff (Updated with Pictures & Special Announcement)
by Matt Tamanini - Jul 10, 2014

This week's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE had a very Broadway feel to it with Josh Bergasse, the choreographer of the upcoming ON THE TOWN revival, staging a Top-20 routine to the show's anthem 'New York, New York' (the one by Bernstein, Comden, and Green, not Kander and Ebb). As we learned last week, this season's winner will earn a spot in the musical's ensemble. While some people, including @Actor_Friend, don't like this idea, remember, the last network show to give away roles on Broadway brought us Laura Osnes, so let's reserve judgment, just in case a reality show brings us more Broadway royalty this time.
