by Jeffrey Ellis - May 3, 2016

Hard to believe, but it's been four years since we sat down with Jeremy Benton, whom we've since referred to as Broadway's Best Tap Dancer every chance we've had, and now it seems as that title has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just yesterday, Benton - a native of Springfield, Tennessee - was honored with a nomination for a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in the category for best off-Broadway male dancer, heralding his critically acclaimed role in Cagney, the Musical. BWW Review: SPRING AWAKENING at Runway Theatre
by Kyle Christopher West - May 22, 2016

In 2007, Dunken Sheik and Steven Sater's rock musical SPRING AWAKENING took home eight of the eleven Tony Awards it was nominated for, including the coveted Best Musical award. It was bold, new, edgy - and it caught the hearts and minds of everyone who saw it. Although the current local production at Runway Theatre is unlikely to be held to the same standards, the audience reaction to the company's opening night performance was every bit as excited about the show as the audiences in New York. BWW Interview: Galen J. Williams, Swing for MOTOWN THE MUSICAL
by Christine Swerczek - Mar 18, 2015

When I was asked to interview a cast member of "MOTOWN THE MUSICAL" currently on tour, I chose Galen J. Williams. I had two reasons. The first is that I had previously seen him performing in a Broadway Dreams Foundation show in Los Angeles and found him to be a captivating performer. The second is that I am intrigued by the demands of a swing. So I called Galen and spoke with him about MOTOWN and swings and Broadway dreaming. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Harvey Fierstein's 1987 ON TIDY ENDINGS - Still Witty, Still Raw, Still So Relevant
by Gil Kaan - Jun 8, 2015

Harvey Fierstein's one-act On Tidy Endings, originally part of his 1987 Safe Sex trilogy, holds up very well in the abled reins of director Sara Wagner and her kick-ass cast. Set in a time when gay men only came out of their closets on a need-to-know basis (ex-wives, kids), contracting AIDS equalled a death sentence. Still, the after-effects of a gay man dying have similar revelancy in 2015. (more...)

BWW Review: OCCUPATION, A Provocative Look at the Future After War
by Ellen Dostal - Jun 14, 2016

We meet five women in Merri Biechler's new play OCCUPATION - three mothers and two daughters - none related by blood, all connected by something larger. The United States looks completely different than it did five years ago, before the terrorist takeover by an unnamed faction. Martial law is in effect. An undercurrent of anger bubbles just beneath the surface and we are told repeatedly that these are days of caution.  (more...)

BWW Interviews: Lindsay Nicole Chambers of KINKY BOOTS at Dallas Summer Musicals
by Kyle West - Feb 6, 2015

In just over two weeks, a parade of long-legged men and women will march into Music Hall at Fair Park, delivering Dallas the national tour of Kinky Boots. As part of Dallas Summer Musical's 75th anniversary season, the show features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper (yes, that Cyndi Lauper!) and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Kinky Boots is the dazzling, smash-hit Broadway musical based on the 2005 film of the same name. Yesterday, I spoke with Lindsay Nicole Chambers, who stars as Lauren in the Kinky Boots tour. With three Broadway shows under her belt (Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Lysistrata Jones), and now three Broadway national tours (Elf, Hairspray, Kinky Boots), Lindsay is known for her incredible versatility and her incomparable comedic talent. She's also appeared onscreen in Across The Universe, and in Submissions Only, a comedy web series about the casting and audition process for Broadway theatre (written by and featuring some of Broadway's greatest artists). Lindsay is also no stranger to Dallas, having performed at Dallas Theatre Center in the pre-Broadway run of Lysistrata Jones (which was known as Give It Up in Dallas). (more...)

BWW Interview: Six Degrees of THE FOLLOWING with Kevin Bacon
by Jennifer McHugh - Feb 26, 2015

When I was young, age isn't really relevant, but young, I, along with the rest of the young girls in America fell in love with Ren McCormick aka Kevin Bacon in a tiny little film called FOOTLOOSE. He had been in other films such as ANIMAL HOUSE, DINER and FRIDAY THE 13TH to name a few, but it was his Dancing Around a barn in tight jeans that did it for me. So imagine my delight when I got to be on the phone with him last week to talk about his upcoming season of THE FOLLOWING! (more...)

BWW Review: Upstream Theater's Haunting SHINING CITY
by Chris Gibson - Feb 15, 2016

Everyone needs someone who's a good listener when they're troubled. And, when you find yourself hesitant or unable to open up to a loved one about something, you can always seek out a therapist to talk to. Therapists offer objective observations that allow their patients to express their feelings without the fear of being judged harshly or over-critically. They're also there to provide assistance in modifying behaviors and thought patterns which are affecting your ability to fully function, at least, if they're any good at what they do. But, they're people too. They have their own lives and their own baggage. Playwright Conor McPherson enters this private world with his work, SHINING CITY, a spellbinding examination of a group of people who all seem to have 'unfinished business', and as director Toni Dorfman notes in the program, 'a need for absolution'. Upstream Theater's production is excellent, and I found myself completely immersed to the point where the play lingered in my memory for days after I'd seen it. That's compelling stuff, and it's the type of work that Upstream does on a consistent basis. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theater Latte Da and Hennepin Theatre Trust Collaborate on a Spectacular and Poignant Re-Imagined OLIVER!
by Jill Schafer - Feb 11, 2015

Theater Latte Da and Hennepin Theatre Trust have formed a beautiful partnership called 'Broadway Re-Imagined,' in which they combine the resources of the Trust with the creativity and innovation of Latte Da to produce a Broadway-sized musical with all local talent and that special Latte Da twist. After the powerful rock musical Aida and the brilliant Ivey Award-winning Cabaret, they return this year with Oliver!, the 1960 musical based on Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist. But don't let all those adorable moppets Dancing Around the stage and singing upbeat tunes fool you. Oliver! is not a light and fluffy happy musical, well, not solely anyway. It's also a dark and somber look at such serious issues as child abuse and neglect, the desperation of poverty, and violence. But fortunately, after all the death and darkness, the curtain call ends with a reprise of a happy number, so we can all leave the theater with that happy musical feeling. But perhaps we also leave with a deeper thought about the relevance and seriousness of what we just saw, wrapped up in a gorgeous musical theater package, to ponder further at a later date. BWW Reviews: Passions Erupt in THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY at The Fox Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Apr 9, 2016

Based on the novel by Robert James Waller, that people seem to either love or loath, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY would seem to be a story which relies very heavily on particular imagery conjured up in the readers' mind by the landscape the characters occupy. The film version did make a valiant effort to convey that, even if it had a number of shortcomings. But, that would seem to be a rather large hurdle to clear for a stage production, much less a musical. So, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I genuinely enjoyed this musical adaptation. Jason Robert Brown's music and lyrics (book by Marsha Norman) fit each character and moment like a glove, while Dancing Around different styles to reflect various moods and emotions. Plus, the story is compelling enough to translate to a wide audience, especially those who like their stories a bit sentimental and bittersweet. The current touring production onstage at The Fox Theatre is certainly well worthy of your time and attention, and you can see it through April 17th, 2016. (more...)
