BWW Review: DEBORAH ZALL Project Illuminates Archetypes at The Graham Studio
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 19, 2016

I longed to see more. One would love to see the Martha Graham Dance Company commission a new from Ms. Zall. Unlike their usual fare, she clearly understands stagecraft and is able to communicate in the language of their founder. It seems to me that all she needs is the opportunity. Denise Vale, the Graham company's Artistic Associate was in the audience. Perhaps she will communicate what a boon it would be to work with Ms. Zall to her colleagues. (more...)

by Andria Tieman - Mar 8, 2016

Festival Ballet's productions are always exciting and beautiful, but the UP CLOSE ON HOPE series is a rare treat.  Unlike the lavish productions at PPAC or the Vets, these are small, intimate performances of works one might not see anywhere else.  This spring's UP CLOSE program showcases the best of what Festival is all about with two stunning pieces featuring new choreography, new musical arrangement and hauntingly beautiful performances from our local dancers.  This program is a rare treat in that leaves the viewer emotionally disarmed, but still wanting more. BWW Review: LA FAMILIA PERATEDES, Based on Lorca's 'The House of Bernarda Alba'
by BWW Staff - Mar 13, 2016

Family is a serious matter for Filipinos; it's something personal, sensitive, and private. To have it as a central theme for a play is seldom traversed, and if so, it's done with prudence. In the current restaging of Victorio Concepcion's LA FAMILIA PERATEDES, a play in Tagalog based on Federico Garcia Lorca's 'La Casa de Bernarda Alba,' the production is worth a visit simply because of its familial theme that's seldom tackled. It also proves to be a timely work that exposes its audiences to domestic lives normally concealed because of destructive personal pride. (more...)

'The Deborah Zall Project: In The Company of Women' Set for Martha Graham Studio Theater, 5/13-14
by BWW News Desk - Apr 12, 2016

Deborah Zall (www.deborahzall.com) left the Martha Graham fold to pursue an independent career as a soloist, creating dramatic portrayals of women that are based primarily on works of dramatic literature. Her signature pieces include dances inspired by female characters drawn from Eugene O'Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Tennessee Williams and F. Garcia Lorca. Last year, she was convinced to re-stage six of her classic female solos for past and present Martha Graham Dance Company members. The resulting evening, titled 'The Deborah Zall Project: In the Company for Women,' was mounted as an informal presentation in the Martha Graham Studio Theater in Westbeth. It proved so sensational that Ms. Zall was pressed to remount the evening this year as a full production. This time, it'll be done with four of her own pieces plus two complimentary works drawn from the Anna Sokolow Company. The concert will bear the same name and will be presented May 13 and 14, again at the Martha Graham Studio Theater, by Zall's nonprofit company, Classic Contemporary Dance Heritage Ltd. (more...)
