QUARTET Opens Tonight at The Old Globe

The Old Globe presents the third production of the 2014 Summer Season, Ronald Harwood's comedy QUARTET, directed by Richard Seer (Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage, The Last Romance). Harwood received an Academy Award for his screenplay of The Pianist and was nominated for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Dresser (also a hit on Broadway and the West End). QUARTET will play in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, now through August 24, 2014. The show opens tonight, July 31. (more...)

The three-person cast features Everyman Resident Company Members Clinton Brandhagen, Danny Gavigan and Beth Hylton. Joseph W. Ritsch makes his Everyman directorial debut with the production. Kansas City Repertory Theatre will open its 50th anniversary celebration with the Kansas City premiere of David Cromer's Our Town, an enduring American story which examines the everyday lives of an average town's citizens in the early twentieth century. Our Town, one of the greatest American plays written by Thornton Wilder, the three-time Pulitzer prize-winning playwright and novelist will be directed by David Cromer, MacArthur Foundation 'genius' grant recipient and director of KC Rep's 2009 production of The Glass Menagerie which received national and local critical acclaim. Lyndsey Turner's production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the title role, doesn't begin performances until next summer at the Barbican Theatre, but according to the Telegraph, the show is already breaking records. Tickets for the play went on sale on August 11, and since then the show 'has become the most in-demand theatre production of all time.' Not only is Hamlet outselling the next most-popular production, the Young Vic's A Streetcar Named Desire, by four to one, but searches for tickets on Viagogo also surpass those for Beyonce and Jay Z's world tour. Lyndsey Turner's production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the title role, will begin performances at the Barbican Theatre on 5 August 2015, with opening night on 25 August at 7pm. The twelve week limited run will conclude on 31 October 2015. Set design is by Es Devlin. Further casting and details for this production will be announced at a later date.
