Opera San José (OSJ) continues its season with Gioachino Rossini's The Italian Girl in Algiers. This sparkling and fast-paced opera weaves a madcap story full of twists and turns into a comic adventure to a land of magnificent palaces, swashbuckling pirates and lavish harems. The Italian Girl in Algiers will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Six performances are scheduled from November 15 through 30 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San José. (more...)

As previously announced, playing the central roles of Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley will be Jude Monk McGowan and Laura Atherton. Jude Monk McGowan has just finished playing Conrad in the acclaimed Punchdrunk/National Theatre production of The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable. His other credits include Joe Wright's screen adaptation of Anna Karenina, Little Britain and Faith, Hope and Charity at Southwark Playhouse. Laura Atherton's theatre credits include the recent imitating the dog productions The Zero Hour and Six Degrees below the Horizon. The other roles will be played by Morven Macbeth (LeanerFasterStronger, Sheffield Theatres/Chol Theatre), Matt Prendergast (Six Degrees Below the Horizon, imitating the dog), Marco Rossi (Histra, Ferodo Bridges) and making his professional stage debut Joshua Johnson. San Francisco Opera's 2014-15 Season opens September 5, 2014 with a dramatic new production of Vincenzo Bellini's bel canto masterpiece Norma, starring American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in one of opera's most dazzling and demanding roles. American mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas is the young priestess Adalgisa; Italian tenor Marco Berti is Pollione; and American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is Oroveso.
