Priestley wrote An Inspector Calls within a week after the finish of World War II, expressing the urgent need for social change. Like many others, Priestley was a changed man upon his return from fighting in World War I. After witnessing the impoverished and the aristocratic fighting and dying side-by-side, he was horrified to observe the rise of social inequalities after the war. With the onset of another war, Priestley felt the need to speak out on the issue..

Not only will Americans of today relate to the play's call for personal and social accountability, they will delight in the twists and turns of Priestley's plot. The social messages intertwine with the intrigue, much in the way that Dickens and Shaw weave stories of social consciousness into engaging narratives. This makes An Inspector Calls an ideal fit for the holiday season, giving audiences the depth of language and complex issues they have come to expect of Remy Bumppo along with the sheer entertainment of a thrilling mystery.

by Jenny Antill - Nov 4, 2014

J.B. Priestley's most iconic play is notably An Inspector Calls. However, before this, there was Dangerous Corner, which premiered in 1932 and is currently touring the UK. The play centres on a dinner party being thrown by Freda and Robert Caplan. Along with Caplan's business partners and other guests, one remark regarding Robert's recently deceased brother causes anarchy between them. The play ends as it begins but minus the disclosure of this remark and showing how differently the evening could have panned out. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM Closes Oyster Mill Year With LaughsBWW Reviews: MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM Closes Oyster Mill Year With Laughs
by Marakay Rogers - Nov 25, 2014

Oyster Mill Playhouse closed its season with a hysterical British bedroom farce, one of Oyster Mill's strongest suitsRay Cooney is England's king of the bedroom farce, best known for his RUN FOR YOUR WIFE and for IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY. But his late 60's-early 70's set MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM may be funnier than either of those. It's definitely the sort of play that should be on the Oyster Mill Playhouse stage where, fortunately, it has been now. Oyster Mill has the configuration for farce, as well as intimate seating allowing audiences to miss no hilarious move, much less the necessary entrances and exits for the best farces. (more...)
