Priestley wrote An Inspector Calls within a week after the finish of World War II, expressing the urgent need for social change. Like many others, Priestley was a changed man upon his return from fighting in World War I. After witnessing the impoverished and the aristocratic fighting and dying side-by-side, he was horrified to observe the rise of social inequalities after the war. With the onset of another war, Priestley felt the need to speak out on the issue..

Not only will Americans of today relate to the play's call for personal and social accountability, they will delight in the twists and turns of Priestley's plot. The social messages intertwine with the intrigue, much in the way that Dickens and Shaw weave stories of social consciousness into engaging narratives. This makes An Inspector Calls an ideal fit for the holiday season, giving audiences the depth of language and complex issues they have come to expect of Remy Bumppo along with the sheer entertainment of a thrilling mystery.

by Jack L. B. Gohn - Sep 14, 2015

Inspector Goole (Chris Genebach), already knows the answers to all his questions, yet his method, bullying confirmatory confessions out of the family members, is great theater. Until the advent of the Cockney-accented Goole, the King's English-speaking Birlings mostly fancy themselves honorable, kind, and praiseworthy. In reality, they are the beneficiaries of a caste system which, as Priestley depicts it, is a citadel against the poor, whose poverty is an inevitable outcome of the rules that the caste in the citadel impose. Goole exposes the unsavory truths of this arrangement, destroying all the Birlings' illusions of innocence in the process - perhaps, though the play also makes clear how evergreen and hard-to-eradicate such illusions are. BWW Review: AN INSPECTOR CALLS at The Hampton Theatre CompanyBWW Review: AN INSPECTOR CALLS at The Hampton Theatre Company
by Melissa Giordano - Oct 28, 2015

The old English play An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley has had an interesting, long journey. It was first performed in 1945 and then in the UK in 1946 with an opening on Broadway in 1947 that was, strangely, dubbed as "stale". Over time, interestingly, it has become very successful even winning a couple of Tony awards for its 1994 Broadway revival. You will see why as The Hampton Theatre Company (HTC) has mounted a brilliant production of this riveting story. (more...)

A British Invasion: Stars Cross the Pond to Light Up Broadway This Fall!A British Invasion: Stars Cross the Pond to Light Up Broadway This Fall!
by Nicole Rosky - Oct 25, 2015

'[Thank you] to an incredible cast of British and American actors who make the Atlantic look like a little creek you can just kind of pop across,' said Dame Helen Mirren upon receiving her 2015 Tony Award. The stage and screen star reprised her critically-acclaimed performance in THE AUDIENCE after a West End run in 2013, and she was just one of many to 'pop across' an ocean for a stab at Broadway.  An unprecedented amount of British talent took over Broadway last year, bringing us such productions as THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, WOLF HALL: PARTS 1 & 2, and SKYLIGHT.   It doesn't seem like the trend is ending anytime soon. This fall, Broadway will welcome a slew of British actors- some of whom will be making their US stage debuts in incoming productions. And it's not just performers. We're getting some complete British imports in shows like A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE and KING CHARLES III. Below, we're taking a moment to shine a spotlight on this season's British imports. (more...)
