Due to popular demand, Aurora Theatre Company announces that it will add a second extension week of performances of the West Coast Premiere of Fraser Grace's provocative BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE. Jon Tracy, who directed Aurora's productions of Gidion's Knot and The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, helms BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE, featuring L. Peter Callender (The Soldier's Tale, Permanent Collection), Dan Hiatt (Wittenberg, The Arsonists), Leontyne Mbele-Mbong (African-American Shakespeare Company, Lamplighters), and Adrian Roberts (TheatreWorks, California Shakespeare Theater). BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE plays now through December 20 (added performances: Tuesday, December 16, 7pm; Wednesday, December 17, 8pm; Thursday, December 18, 8pm; Friday, December 19, 8pm; Saturday, December 20, 8pm) at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley. Playwrights Horizons' production of POCATELLO, the world premiere of a new play by Obie, Drama Desk and Lortel awards winner and 2014 MacArthur Foundation 'Genius' grantee Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale at PH, The Few, A Bright New Boise), is directed by Davis McCallum (The Whale at PH, The Few, London Wall, A Bright New Boise, Water by the Spoonful). The play is the third production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season. The production will begin previews tonight, November 21 with an opening night set for Monday, December 15. Museum of the Moving Image has announced the lineup for its First Look Festival, an expanded and reconceived version of its annual showcase for inventive new international cinema. Now in its fourth year, First Look,with a lineup that has expanded both in size and scope, is now officially a festival, the first major moving image event of the year. First Look will take place at the Museum from January 9 through 18, 2015. “First Look reflects the breadth and adventurousness that defines the Museum,” said Chief Curator David Schwartz. “This year, we are expanding beyond programs in the Redstone Theater, with screenings in the Bartos Screening Room, and a newly commissioned large-scale video installation.” The Museum is also announcing a programming partnership with FIDMarseille, the cutting-edge documentary festival programmed under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Rehm. When they were still aspiring young artists Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar, TV star Josh Radnor, and Tony Award-nominated actress Melissa Erico each spent a transformative summer in the Powerhouse Theater Training Program. Now in its 31st year, the renowned annual program at Vassar College will run from June 19-July 26, 2015 and is currently accepting applications. Participants choose a curriculum focused on acting, playwriting, or directing, and together form a Company, which performs works for the public. The program is available to rising high school seniors through college-age students, as part of the prestigious Powerhouse Theater collaboration between Vassar College and New York Stage and Film. Opera Atelier's 2014-2015 season continues with the Berlioz version of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice, a timeless love story based on the Greek myth. Opera Atelier most recently produced Gluck's opera in 2007, but this will mark the company's first exploration of Berlioz's 1859 version, in which the role of Orpheus is scored for a female contralto. Opera Atelier's co-artistic directors are proud that Tafelmusik has agreed to be part of this groundbreaking project, which marks the orchestra's furthest foray into 19th century orchestration. Next is the US premiere of The Herd (April 2, 2015 - June 7, 2015), the deftly comic story of a suburban English family by actor-playwright Rory Kinnear. Ensemble member and Tony Award winner Frank Galati directs in place of previously announced director K. Todd Freeman, who had an artistic scheduling conflict. very few playwrights have the acute sense of American place you find in D'Amour's beautiful writing. Especially toward the end, 'Airline Highway' is a worthy follow-up to the similarly adroit 'Detroit,' a Pulitzer Prize finalist about another great city ridden and then mostly abandoned by the country at large. These are both moralistic plays (with similar codas) suggesting we pay more attention to the beautiful urban gardens between sea and shining sea, very much dimmed by human tears. (more...)
