BWW Review: BOOTYCANDY Sizzles With Satire and Seethes With Inner Turmoil
by Perry Tannenbaum - Mar 17, 2017

BWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON at Hobby Center
by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Jan 6, 2017

The city of Houston has been on news feeds with its share of religious drama. Kim Burrell's hateful rhetoric towards the gays has caused an uproar in the gay and Christian communities, and now the controversial religious satire musical BOOK OF MORMON, written by SOUTH PARK creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Robert Lopez (FROZEN), is back in town. The musical opened on Broadway in 2011 and has been pissing off and entertaining packed houses ever since. Last night's show was magnetic; there's a reason why The New York Times says this is the best musical of the century. (more...)

BWW Blog: Jessica Vanek - What Makes a Good Show?
by Guest Blogger: Jessica Vanek - Jan 18, 2017

Jess here.  2017 is upon us, and keeping with tradition, I have made a resolution.  No, it's not your typical "eat healthier" or "get a gym membership" kind of resolution, its one involving creativity.  You see, I attend a performing arts high school in Las Vegas and I can safely say that the art of musical theatre is my passion.  I've decided to write a one act musical this year, a feat which I know is incredibly daunting, but I am always up for a challenge.  I already have my plotline figured out, and I'm really happy with what I have, but now I just need to write it.  The problem is, I don't know where to start.  When looking at iconic musicals, I find it impossible to make a distinct connection between them all. This begs the question, what makes a good show?  This can be interpreted many ways; from a technical standpoint, to the content, to the actors portraying the characters.  The whole idea of "a good show" baffles me, because no one shares the same opinion when defining what is good vs. what is bad.   (more...)

BWW Review: DIRTY DANCING: THE CLASSIC STORY ON STAGE at Theater League
by Cary Ginell - Feb 6, 2017

The success of the awkwardly titled Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage depends primarily on whether or not you were a fan of the motion picture it was closely modeled after. It's easy to say this since the stage version is nearly identical to the film, and in many ways works better as a live production. For the uninitiated or those who steered clear of the film, Dirty Dancing was one of the most successful motion pictures of the 1980s. The low-budget film became a surprise hit, earning $214 million at the box office and becoming the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video. The soundtrack LP, featuring a combination of original songs and vintage hits from the early 1960s, sold 32 million copies and spent four months on top of the best-selling album charts. Looking at the film from today's perspective, 30 years later, one wonders why it was so big. Though many remember the film as a charming coming-of-age story, critics called it 'schmaltzy,' citing the formulaic portrayal of its stock characters spouting trite dialog. (more...)

BWW Feature: Mark and Ryan Kleinman, Living the Dream
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Apr 23, 2017

I am incredibly proud of all my kids and Ryan is pursuing his dream as a performer. He has been performing for quite awhile now as a professional and I have had the idea that this would be so since about his Junior year in High School. I have always taken the time to include my kids (when they have shown an interest) into the shows I was doing. Ryan and his older sister, Kaitlynn, were able to be more inundated with it at a young age as I was more active as a professional performer and they got to be backstage and at rehearsal, and often in shows with me. Whenever I was in a show that needed kids, I got them an audition and, since they were talented, often got cast, so we were able to share the stage. Sound of Music, South Pacific, Music Man, Secret Garden, A Christmas Carol, all shows that my kids been able to share with me. (more...)
