When young, American Alice follows a mime into an elevator, she finds herself in a strange new world. Loosely inspired by Chagall's Paris Through The Window, Alice encounters two little runts with very sticky fingers and a very naughty Queen. She runs her first Caucus Race and meets a deck of characters that seem familiar and new at the same time.

After a successful run at The SoHo Playhouse in June of 2011, Alice... (formerly Alice Au Pays Des Merveilles) was selected as an open-ended children's theater project for the playhouse. Playing every Saturday at 1pm, children and adults will be enthralled with Alice's curiouser and curiouser adventure.

Stretching the limit of our imaginations and creating an entirely new Wonderland, the production features a cast of ten actors doubling as the many characters of Lewis Carroll's classic story.

BWW Reviews: MOUNTAIN VIEW Offers a Pleasing EscapeBWW Reviews: MOUNTAIN VIEW Offers a Pleasing Escape
by Joseph Baker - Jul 20, 2015

It's hard to reconcile the name of the title character in MOUNTAIN VIEW with that of its author. 'Jocate' seems a variation on Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' (when will Appalachian characters have names like 'Sue' or 'Nancy'?), while author 'Teri Feigelson' suggests a world entirely alien to cabins and mountain ledges. Yet, everything seems to come together in Playhouse on the Square's production of the winner of the 2013 NewWorks Playwriting Competition, currently being staged at TheatreWorks. In fact, with its gentle, wistful tone and incorporation of original, tonally related songs, MOUNTAIN VIEW evokes a film from some years ago, the little-seen but much-lauded SONGCATCHER, with turn-of-the-century musicologist Janet McTeer finding substance and artistry in Appalachian music (along with a romantic interlude with a hirsute Aidan Quinn in one of his last leading man roles). It even reminded me of (now nearly forgotten) Bobbie Gentry's concept album DELTA SWEETE, with the artist's songs depicting the characters and area she knew as a girl. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Max & Louie Productions' Brilliant THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGEBWW Reviews: Max & Louie Productions' Brilliant THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE
by Chris Gibson - Jul 16, 2015

If you've seen director Robert Aldrich's 1968 film version of THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE you're probably going to be greatly surprised when you see the actual play it was based on (written by Frank Marcus). The film was initially rated 'X' due to the era in which it was released, as well as the inclusion of a two minute sequence that's much more titillating than anything present in the original work itself. But, things are different these days. Television shows broadcast during what used to be referred to as the 'family hour' are far more racy with their content and dialog than anything you'll encounter watching Max & Louie Productions' superb staging of this play. Marcus crafted a brilliant, pitch black comedic farce that may have just been a bit too subtle for the motion picture industry, which, at the time, was just beginning to explore alternative lifestyles in a more graphic fashion. The film is good, but the play is much better. See it for yourself. It's required viewing as far as I'm concerned. (more...)
