Last year, when I passed up my first opportunity to see DIRTY DANCING at Belk Theater, I had this naive idea that it would be a musical adaptation of the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. With the return of the national tour Charlotte, this time at cavernous Ovens Auditorium, I persisted in my folly long after the curtain rose. Silly me, I overlooked the fine print in my playbill under the florid romance novel italics of the DIRTY DANCING logo: 'the classic story on stage.' (more...)

Disney Theatrical Productions and the New Orleans Theatre Association announced today tickets for the long-awaited engagement of Disney's THE LION KING will go on sale to the public Friday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. The show will leap onto the Saenger Theatre stage for the first time Wednesday, Jan. 4, for a limited engagement of four weeks through Sunday, Jan. 29. Even so, when Curtain Call's executive director and artistic head decided to produce David Mamet's testosterone-driven classic, Glengarry Glenn Ross with all females, he knew heads would turn and tongues would wag. LA Opera will celebrate Halloween with two screenings of the 1922 silent classic Nosferatu, featuring a new score created by Matthew Aucoin, the company's new Artist in Residence. One of the greatest horror films ever made, the supremely creepy vampire thriller will be accompanied live by Mr. Aucoin conducting a chamber ensemble of musicians from the LA Opera Orchestra and soprano soloist Liv Redpath, a member of the company's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. Presented as part of the company's Off Grand initiative, the screenings will take plAce on October 29 and 31 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel.
