BWW Interviews: Kelly Warne Talks THE RESIDUALS, Stand-Up, Sex Therapy, and Bodily Functions
by Matt Tamanini - May 29, 2014

As a general journalistic rule, if you are going to be writing an article, a stand-up comic is a terrible interview subject if you are looking for controlled, measured responses. However, if you are ok with the interview occasionally going off the rails and having to turn the volume up really loud on the interview tape just to hear answers through the laughter, then go for it. Hidden identities and high society collide to provide a spirited evening of song and dance and slamming doors in "Cole Porter's You Never Know." The baron's butler's head has been turned by a lovely society woman, but at his station, he knows he doesn't stand a chance. If he were only a baron…. BWW Reviews: Sam Bass Showcases Collection of Short Plays with REFRIED FLIMFLAMMERY
by Jeff Davis - May 21, 2014

The words 'a collection of original short plays' have a tendency to either excite the seasoned theatergoer or strikes fear in their hearts. Every brilliant work was once original, and therefore some original work can be brilliant. On the other hand, a night of original short plays can be like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. You Never Know what you're going to get. Sam Bass Theatre's current offering, Refried Flimflammery is occasionally the former, but more often the later. There are some moments of brilliance, but most of the evening is uneven. (more...)

BWW Blog: What I Learned Growing Up in the Arts
by Guest Blogger: Lindsay Mitchell - Mar 21, 2014

I was lucky enough to grow up in a strong arts community in Jackson, TN. They had a thriving performing arts scene thanks to JRPD and The Jackson Theatre Guild. I vividly remember my first experience with the arts. My mother enrolled me in JRPD's performing arts camp. I thought she was the devil. Despite all my tears and reservations that week proved to be a defining moment in my life. Now as an adult, I am asked on a regular basis why I believe the arts are important in the lives of young students. Occasionally I will reply with the latest study but more often than not I pull from my personal experience with growing up in the arts. (more...)

BWW Reviews: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Powerful Production of THE HOMECOMING
by Chris Gibson - Jun 2, 2014

Harold Pinter's THE HOMECOMING has been referred to as one of his early 'menacing' comedies. I suppose that that's an accurate enough description, but I would say that the actual humor is pitch black in nature. It's a twisted tale that Pinter writes, and it's funny in the most unsettling ways. Characters ask questions that are often ignored, leaving long uncomfortable silences that truly speak volumes. The St. Louis Actors' Studio has assembled a superb cast that understands this material has to be played straight to really pay off, and under Milton Zoth's expert direction they excel. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Apr 24, 2014

The Houston Improv Festival is a four day festival of live improv comedy performances and workshops. Performers use teamwork and the basic improv tenet of "Yes, and…" to weave completely unscripted 20-25 minute shows with distinctive characters and unique scenarios, often sharing worlds that only exist in the performers' imaginations. Leading the charge is the hardhitting national duo Jet Eveleth and Holly Laurent of iO West. Houston's This Infinite Closet performs their entire show in the dark. The Latin flair of the TV novella inspires Austin's Shades of Brown. Chicago's Laser Improv illustrates an improvised tale using light. Houston's Mockumentalists perform an improvised documentary.
