BWW Review: TheatreWorks Revives an Excellent DADDY LONG LEGS

Like many, I was introduced to the charms of Daddy Long Legs when the show recently became the first Off-Broadway production to stream a performance live on the Internet. Bay Area audiences may have an advantage on the rest of the world, though, as the show had its origins at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. The company is no stranger to Paul Gordon musicals, having given us an excellent revival of Emma as recent as last December. But Daddy Long Legs is perhaps the most fully realized of Gordon's works, exhibiting both his propensity for story-driven songs and some of his most exquisite ballads and duets. (more...)

Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA is a 2013 Tony Award winning stage adaptation of the 1957 musical for television starring Julie Andrews, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The new book by Douglas Carter Beane is based partly on Hammerstein's original 1957 book. The piece was remade twice for television, Once in 1965 and again in 1997, and was adapted for the stage in various versions prior to the 2013 Broadway adaptation. The 2013 score features several Rodgers and Hammerstein songs that weren't in any previous version, including one trunk song originally written for, but eventually cut from, South Pacific. The new songs include 'Me, Who Am I?', 'Now Is the Time', 'The Pursuit', 'Loneliness of Evening' and 'There's Music in You'. (more...)

Charles D. Dantzler was born in the 1950s; a time of rapid change in the world, and was stricken with polio at the age of two. With a life beginning on the cusp of the information-driven, technology-based society known today, Dantzler was able to experience the tail end of yesterday while living to see where we are headed for our tomorrow. Dantzler, a graduate of Flint Northern High School, is the second of six children born to a stay-at-home, God-fearing, loving mother and a hardworking father, a factory line worker for the General Motors Corporation. Charles was raised in a working-class neighborhood where everyone knew one another, and his upbringing as well as his receiving the salvation experience at age fifteen have not only enabled him to move beyond the results of the polio since age two but also laid the foundation for his present-day life.
