Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then heís offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.

Killing my enemies is easy. The challenge is to change the way they think, to control their minds. And I think I controlled yours pretty well. In years to come, Iíll be able to say: Bulgakov? Yeah, we even trained him. He gave up. He saw the light. We broke him, we can break anybody. Itís man versus monster, Mikhail. And the monster always wins.

John Hodgeís blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.

Following its successful run in the Cottesloe Theatre, Collaborators is transferring to the Olivier Theatre on April 30 for a limited run.

Wild Art's H&G to Play Paloma Street Studio in FebruaryWild Art's H&G to Play Paloma Street Studio in February
by BWW News Desk - Jan 5, 2016

H&G, a public outcry is a hyperbolic performance placing the audience in the shoes of Hansel & Gretel, to wander through America's blooming new fear of extreme weather in a dreamlike, wild, and surprising journey. Poised in a poetic landscape, this powerful live-music performance is comprised of a distorted Suburbanite and other amplified characters, illuminated puppets, dark dancing shadows, and a lot of meat.  Drawing from the third worst drought in US history and Hurricane Sandy, source material includes Hansel and Gretel, newspaper articles, American folk and rock songs, and text generated by John Michael Johnson. by Stephen Hanks - Jan 20, 2016

After BroadwayWorld launched its New York Cabaret Awards in 2012, the cabaret section's editors realized that the selected categories and the popular vote nature of the election didn't adequately recognize some great performances and shows for that particular year. So in 2013, BWW added "Editor's Choice Awards" to the mix to not only reward special performances but also to acknowledge people who have helped grow cabaret and foster the spirit of the art form. This year, BWW New York Cabaret Editor Stephen Hanks and his reviewing staff-including Alix Cohen, David Clarke, Billie Roe, Rembert Block, and John Hoglund-selected seven stars of cabaret for this special honor. Now that the Awards for 2015 performances and shows are official, we wanted to tell you a bit about this year's "Editor's Choice Award" winners and offer them a chance to thank the New York cabaret community. Congratulations to all these worthy Award recipients. (more...)

Buntport Theater to Present 10 MYTHS ON THE PROPER APPLICATION OF BEAUTY PRODUCTSBuntport Theater to Present 10 MYTHS ON THE PROPER APPLICATION OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS
by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2016

10 Myths on the Proper Application of Beauty Products, the first full-length show of Buntport's 15th Season, could be called an adaptation of local author Miriam Suzanne's novel Riding SideSaddle*. However, it is more like a supplement to the novel, which is printed on 250 interchangeable index cards and is an 'open source' text, meant to be added to, adapted, morphed into something new. Following a group of friends that resist order, category and completion, this play weaves myth and storytelling with every day rituals. It is about people deeply in love, suffering loss, celebrating strangeness, all while they pluck their eyebrows. It is about the Greek myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus, who are merged into 'one being of both sexes' and about what we see when we look in the mirror. Oh, and the whole thing is underscored by a band standing in the bathtub. (more...)
