Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then heís offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.

Yeah, we even trained him. He gave up. He saw the light. We broke him, we can break anybody. Itís man versus monster, Mikhail. And the monster always wins.

John Hodgeís blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.

Following its successful run in the Cottesloe Theatre, Collaborators is transferring to the Olivier Theatre on April 30 for a limited run.

Cygnet Commits to New Play Development with New Commissioning Program

Cygnet Theatre will launch the Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission sponsored by long time Cygnet Theatre supporters Bill and Judy Garrett. Led by Associate Artistic Director Rob Lutfy, the program reinforces the 14 year-old theatre's commitment to new work and discovering new, diverse voices. For two years, Cygnet partnered with the Playwrights Project to present Playwrights in Process which included a multi-day festival including readings, workshops and a reception. This new program has a deeper commitment to helping a playwright finish a work and move toward a possible full production. In addition, Cygnet Theatre will become an associate member of the National New Play Network - a coalition of nonprofit theatres around the country committed to new work. (more...)

That line came from an original track, 'All I Know,' co-written with Ross Baum. Opera Parallele Announces New Children's Opera 'Xochitl and the Flowers', 11/17

As part of its unique annual Hands-on-Opera education and youth performance program, Opera Parallele (OP) will present the world premiere of Xochitl and the Flowers, by OP composer-in-residence Christopher Pratorius. Based on the children's book of the same name by Jorge Argueta and with a libretto by Opera Parallele's Roma Olvera, three free performances will be presented November 17 and 19 at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco. The fully staged and costumed production will be developed during an innovative eight-week residency with third grade students of the Alvarado Elementary School Spanish Immersion Program in San Francisco, assisted by the Opera Parallele creative team and professional singers. Performances will be given Thursday, November 17, at 6 pm and Saturday, November 19, at 11 am and 1 pm at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, 2868 Mission Street in San Francisco. Admission is free, but past Hands-on-Opera performances have filled up quickly, so audience members are encouraged to arrive early. For more information, . (more...)

Theatre Professor Wins Embassy Grant to Produce Play on Violence in Pakistan

Ithaca College Theatre Professor Kathleen has been awarded her second grant from the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan to produce a play that addresses the issue of violence in public spaces in Pakistan. Mulligan and her Collaborators will travel to Pakistan and work with a local theatre group, Theatre Wallay, to develop the play. The play will then be performed in both Pakistan and the U.S. While in the U.S., Theatre Wallay actors will gather information on Americans feelings' about violence in public spaces that will later be incorporated into the play.
