Mozart's final opera, Die Zauberflöte, returns to the Met October 6 for its first full-length performances in German in five seasons. Julie Taymor's imaginative production will be conducted by Adam Fischer and star English tenor Toby Spence as the hero Tamino; South African soprano Pretty Yende as the princess Pamina in her first Met performances since her star-making 2013 company debut; Macedonian soprano Ana Durlovski in her Met debut as Pamina's mother, the terrifying Queen of the Night; Austrian baritone Markus Werba as Papageno, the hapless birdcatcher who is caught up in Tamino's quest; American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the mysterious Speaker of the Temple; and German bass René Pape as the Queen of the Night's nemesis, Sarastro. Cymbeline, under the direction of Caitlin Ryan O'Connell ('16), opens October 16 and Hamlet, directed by James D Palmer ('16) opens October 29, 2014. Cymbeline, a romantic comedy that focuses on rebellion, justice and reconciliation runs October 16-19. Next up, Hamlet, running October 29-November 2, follows a young man searching for truth while avenging his father's mysterious death. Following a critically acclaimed run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe, William Gaminara's comedy The Three Lionsreturns for a national tour and run at St. James Theatre, London. The production begins its tour at Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford (2 - 7 March 2015), before travelling to the New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich (9 - 14 March 2015) and Liverpool Playhouse (16 - 21 March), ahead of a six week run at St James Theatre. There it will open on 26 March, with previews from 24 March, and run until 2 May. Philip Wilson directs Dugald Bruce-Lockhart, Tom Davey and Sean Browne - recreating their roles of David Beckham, David Cameron and Prince William from the original run. (more...)

He is best known for his leading roles in the original Broadway productions of Oklahoma!; Kiss Me, Kate; Kismet; and for playing Marshall Blackstone in the original production of Babes in Arms, (in which he sang the title song) and Hajj in Kismet, for which he received the Tony Award. His 1964 stage performance as Claudius in the Richard Burton Hamlet was filmed live on the stage of the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. His final stage appearance in a musical was in 1973 as Honore LaChaisse in Lerner and Loewe's Gigi. Two years later he starred in a revival of The Skin of Our Teeth. (more...)
