Full Cast Announced for New Musical GROUNDHOG DAY at the Old Vic

Full casting is today announced for the world premiere of the new musical GROUNDHOG DAY, which previews at the Old Vic from July 11 with a press night on August 16. Carlyss Peer will play Rita Hanson, alongside the previously announced Andy Karl in the role of Phil Connors. Eugene McCoy plays cameraman Larry, and the ensemble cast includes Leo Andrew, David Birch, Ste Clough, Roger Dipper, Georgina Hagen, Kieran Jae, Julie Jupp, Andrew Langtree, Vicki Lee Taylor, Emma Lindars, Antonio Magro, Carolyn Maitland, Kirsty Malpass, Lisa Mathieson,  Jenny O'Leary, Leanne Pinder, Mark Pollard, Damien Poole, Jack Shalloo, Andrew Spillett and Spencer Stafford. At the center of the story is a Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant, The Golden Dragon, where a young Chinese man suffering from an oversensitive incisor sparks a whacked and weird series of interconnected stories. One of the least talked about and yet most wonderful things about our area is the Alabama School of Fine Arts, situated in downtown Birmingham. It boasts the beautiful Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre. Although I have been to this theatre several times, today was the first time to be in the building during a school day and in the theatre to see the kids from ASFA perform. They are performing Shakespeare's As You Like It this weekend and it is worth your time to support them. (more...)

A Red Orchid Extends Ike Holter's SENDER

On the heels of their critically acclaimed world premiere of Luna Gale, playwright Rebecca Gilman and Artistic Director Robert Falls again join forces for her newest drama, Soups, Stews, and Casseroles: 1976. Change is coming to a small Wisconsin town when a corporation acquires a local cheese manufacturer, which employs the majority of the town's working class citizens. For the Durst family, the merger presents newfound opportunity-and a moral dilemma. The Chicago premiere, which marks the play's second production following its 2014 world premiere at The Repertory of St. Louis, features Cliff Chamberlain as longtime factory employee Kim Durst; Cora Vander Broek as his wife Kat; Lindsay Stock as their daughter, Kelly. Rounding out the cast are Ty Olwin (Kyle), Angela Reed (Elaine) and Ann Whitney (JoAnne). Morisseau's explanation of the Detroit riots makes a lot of sense, and resonates with my understanding of what happened last year in Baltimore. Morisseau's thesis is that the black citizens of Detroit were not crazy, just reacting to an ongoing culture of police abuse, and that abusive police and military responses were to blame for most of what went wrong once the spark of protest had been struck by the raid of an unlicensed after-hours drinking club known as a 'blind pig.' Frank Farrell presents his adaptation of John Keats's only full-length play, retitled The Dark Ages: Otho the Great, based on the life of Otto I, German king in 936 CE and Holy Roman Emperor from 962 until his death in 973. The production depicts the tragic fate of Otho's valiant but hotheaded son Ludolph, whose unfaithful lover and her scheming brother induce him to rebel against his father and persecute his innocent cousin.
