Virginia Stage Company Announces New Producing Artistic Director

After a national search, Virginia Stage Company is excited to announce the appointment of Tom Quaintance to the position of Producing Artistic Director. Quaintance will work with the Virginia Stage board and staff over the next few months and begin in full on December 1, 2016. Previously, Quaintance served as the Artistic Director of Cape Fear Regional Theatre, an Associate Artist with PlayMakers Repertory Company and Open Fist Theatre Company, and was the Founder and Artistic Director of FreightTrain Shakespeare in Los Angeles. BWW Interview: Steve Perren of PARADE at Panic! Productions

His day job is as associate justice of the Second District, Division Six of the California Courts of Appeal, but Steve Perren's passion for the stage has seen him appear in a variety of shows in Ventura County over the years. He played founding father Roger Sherman in Cabrillo Music Theatre's 2012 production of 1776 and has also appeared in numerous operettas staged by the Ventura County Gilbert and Sullivan Repertoire Company. In Panic! Productions' Parade, currently playing at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, Perren is ideally suited for the part of Judge Leonard S. Roan, who presides over the trial of accused child murderer Leo Frank. Parade deals with the real-life arrest and trial of Frank (played by Joshua Finkel), a Georgia factory superintendent who was accused of murdering 13-year-old factory worker Mary Phagan in 1913. We sat down with Steve during a break in rehearsals for the show, and talked about his unique perspective as an actor who also shares the occupation of the character he portrays. (more...)

The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is thrilled to report that a record-breaking number of recipients will receive the 2016 50/50 Applause Awards, which recognizes theatres that produced 50% or more women playwrights in their 2015/16 season of shows. ICWP defines 50/50 by the number of qualifying performances in a theatre's season. This allows a concrete measurement of the resources being devoted to women playwrights. (more...)

'Thriving Through Seasons': an enjoyable and heroic tale with an optimistic theme. 'Thriving Through Seasons' is the creation of published author, Sarah Wright, who is fourteen years old from Central Pennsylvania. She is affectionately called Reesy or Cupper by her family. Sarah is constantly creating in the kitchen and on paper. She is an animal lover who has two cats, a dog, chickens, and horses she cares for. Her family includes two brothers, one sister, and her mom and dad, Drexel and Virginia Wright. Her sister, Jenna, has multiple medical challenges that lead to paralysis. In order to cope with her family's medical battles, Sarah uses her love for writing to express her experiences, thoughts and emotions. These writings developed the story of 'Thriving Through Seasons.' Her main goal through this work and future projects is to uplift and inspire those who experienced suffering. Her passion is to lead people to Christ Jesus in a creative way so they may find hope in Him, as she did. This book challenged her to take a leap of faith to share her story with others. (more...)
